Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words. My buddy and I had fun this evening. We ate some finger foods, and then we tasted eight different spirits over a couple of hours while our host spoke about them. It was my first time trying Irish, Rye, Japanese, and Scotch spirits, in addition to spirits from Kentucky and Tennessee. The variety of smells and tastes we got to experience was amazing, and it satisfied my curiosity. Kentucky bourbon is still far and way my favorite. (Moderation is important to me. I had the equivalent of two drinks or less along with some foods not on my diet. Back to the routine tomorrow.)

Patrick - if I remember when I install a fresh half blade. It's just a quick drag of the corners across the kitchen knife stone. Doesn't dull the entire blade. Just the tips which is where I've gotten most of my shavette damage.

One time before I learned about it, I'd dipped the heel on a bad set down. Made a nice little slice. Got out the styptic and got it to stop bleeding, and stuck the same part of the blade right back where I'd just cut myself when I continued the shave. Nice thing about a shaving cut - sharp blades don't tear. Very clean edges so if you fold the flap back over it heals quickly with minimal scarring.

 

I agree Rick, the setdown is the dangerous part with the shavette. Had my share of scrapes and nicks last year from poor setdown. I think the rule levelled that out for me . It gave me confidence to enter MAYhem with open blades of all configurations. Lesson learned .

 

no clue where the soap is made or who makes it. the soap container is a three piece affair ,the center comes out to male a lather bowl..i have seen 2 others on the web and they were black containers.feels like styrene plastic like the early 50s gillette cases.. thank you..

Switching to the Luxor tonight after two very nice shaves with the Parker SRX. The mission? Decide, if possible, in two shaves which shavette I prefer. Or at least which one I lean toward early in the process. That's probably more honest. One point of order - I actually started the shave with a Derby blade in the Luxor. It was the blade I used the first few times I tried the Luxor. However, I switched after less than a half pass to a new Shark. One difference in the two razors - the Luxor is quite a bit "looser" on the handle creating the opportunity for the blade to scrape along the edge of the handle or actually just hit it when closing. I noticed it had done that as I was setting up for the shave and I felt like the blade was compromised in the first few strokes. Gotta have a good blade to do a good comparison.

Other than the difference in tightness of the handle to the razor, there really isn't much other difference in the grip or feel. The Luxor is a tad lighter at 56 grams. The SRX comes in at 58. Minor. The design of the Luxor head is the main difference in that it provides a way of eliminating the corners on the blade. There is an extension of the holder that creates a smooth edge on either end. No corner means I drive this one a bit more daringly since I know I won't catch the blade corner. However, it does make it a bit more of a challenge to work close to my goatee line, ears, that sort of thing. Certainly not unmanageable, but just a bit more effort is needed. On the plus side of that equation - can't nick your earlobe or catch a nostril if the corner ain't out there.

I made three full passes and got a nice near-BBS result. There were a couple of things I noticed but I'm going to keep them to myself until tomorrow night. Let's see if what I felt was happening was just the first night issues in going to the razor, know what I mean?

It started raining Russian Steel at HQ today. 100 Ladas showed up along with 200 Sharp Stars. Pavel at Russian Shaving House, my usual Sharp Star pusher, normally includes an extra tuck of blades with every 100 purchased. He was his usual self with that this time, but also included a rather interesting, if a bit strange, gift as well. It appears to be one of three things. 1) A very strange looking caterpillar mounted for my enjoyment. 2) A handmade key ring 3) A listening/surveillance device no doubt reporting back to Vlad's desk in the Kremlin. I'm pretty sure it's number 2 and it's timely! We added a vehicle to our personal fleet this week - one I can use for Uber/Lyft XL rides - and I needed a key ring for it. Problem solved! Unless it crawls away before I get the key on it because, you know, it's really #1.

The Asian cartel members voted and a picture of Lynn honing your razor is an acceptable substitute.

 

I'll make sure I get one on my next visit. I have two more kamisori's to get done plus two traditional straights. If I get them all up and going I may spend a lot more time on the dark side this year.

Easy, terrific shave with this combination. The Soap Commander Honor whipped up beautifully and provided a slick and comforting backdrop for the G5. Smooth whisker removal and cooling application of witch hazel and Honor splash rounded out a drama free shave.
