Wonderful shave, Jim! Congrats on getting through letter S. I'll be on it for a while but am enjoying each shave. Stirling keeps rising to the top as the best in my den.

Or anyone else - let's talk about Stirling Gentleman.

How does the scent compare to any other tobacco-based soaps or splashes? Any comparison at all to Jeeves Tobacco Bay Leaf? Jason, does it compare at all to Maximo Gomez?

I quite enjoy tobacco scents and Stirling is terrific, so Gentleman seems like an easy choice, but I recall using an aftershave sample of it and didn't like it. That was a while back and I wonder if my tastes have changed a little since then.

From my experience with it, I (and I, like Perry, had an aftershave sample), did like it. The tobacco fragrance in I must have mixed in perfectly with the other fragrances(Vanilla, etc).

I honestly haven't tried a lot of tobacco scents, but I have a few, including Gentleman. I include CL Unconditional Surrender and Stirling Haverford in those scents. These are both pipe tobacco. Stirling Gentleman and Wholly Kaw Jamestown Gentleman are both tobacco flower (as is Tabac, I guess). The scent is quite a bit different to me, and lacks the smokiness I get from pipe tobacco scents. It is floral and sweet. I like them all, but if I am being honest, I prefer the pipe tobacco variety.

Thank you, Jim, that's helpful. I had a sample of Jamestown Gentleman a while back and recall the scent pretty well. I have Haverford, too, and like the pipe tobacco varieties a good bit.

You use the word "smokiness"-at first I thought to myself, There sure was a lot of that in the Local Gent Cigar Lounge, but now I would change that to say that the smoke from that one consisted more of ash tray junk than pipes/cigars. The other interesting thought I came up with is that Gentleman may be popular because of the blending of several fragrances(as I wrote in my earlier post) in the same way I like Stephan Bay Rum. I'm not a tobacco man, but Stoylin Gentleman respects my concerns. I'm not a clove man either, but Stephan Bay Rum's cloves are comfortably mixed in with other nice fragrances,. thus Stephan respects my concerns, as well.

I find the Gentleman quite different from most of these others that you have listed, Perry. While it is a tobacco scent -no question- the Vanilla, Amber and Musk are all very present. There is none of the citrus of the Maximo Gomez you referenced, nor the almost pure tobacco with accents of the Jeeves. While I have paired it well with Unconditional Surrender, it is different, but not dramatically so. All jokes aside, I think the thing that turned SWMBO off of it was that it was an incredibly strong scent when it was new. It overpowered everything else in the box on arrival and filled the room with a nice, almost pungent aroma when used that I think she found too much. It has definitely settled down since then.
My favourite tobacco scent is Maximo Gomez, I think, so I won’t place Gentleman above it, or even as its equal. I do, however, really enjoy it and it is one of those jars you find yourself sniffing randomly. In one sentence? Different than all the rest that you have referenced, definitely unique, probably not for everyone, and I will always have a place for it in the den.
Why not throw in a soap sample next Stirling order?

Favourites February is roaring along. Love the NEW LC and the Sputnik is doing just fine. Pulled out the Fine Platinum today. I detest this tub. Too small. I won’t buy a Fine puck with one of these tubs again. I won’t complain about a soap coming without a tub again, either. Just putting it in something else would be easier. Everything did as it should and it was a really nice 3 pass shave. Does the Cool match the Aventus dupe well? Probably not, but they are both awesome.
    Have a great day, all!

    Thanks, Perry!
To my nose Gentleman is nothing like any of my other tobacco scents save one, Wholly Kaw King of Bourbon. Some simalar scent notes but by no means identical. All my other tobacco scents lean toward pipe tobacco which I don't get at all from Gentleman. Definitely worthy of a sample to try out.

Very nice pic of a great looking combo, Perry. The Hussy is so unique, but is a design that makes sense.
Another great looking combo, Jim! I’m just ok with the Stirling Spice. Have you tried Soap Commander Endurance or Barrister’s Reserve Spice?
Another great ‘Jim effect’ on the pic! Is it too easy a joke to say that the Lemon Chill will do an excellent job of covering up the Arko scent? Sorry, yup, too easy...
A very nice (if underused!) prop this morning, Clint. Your wife has good taste.
Yup, the end is near for that tub, Charlie. You may, or may not, have had me looking at Terre d’Hermes last night online...
