Good evening everyone! Again, I am continuing my "firsts" theme. I just finished my shave with my 1950's Henckels Friodur. I purchased it on Ebay and it was a NOS razor. It had the original box, the instructions and the protective sleeve and they were in mint condition. It is also the first time that I have ever tried a 7/8 straight razor. It is also the first time that I have shaved with a vintage straight razor. It has been stated on various sites that beginners shouldn't use a 7/8 straight because it is difficult to get under the nose, etc. Well, this was my 32nd traditional straight razor shave and I didn't have any trouble shaving with this awesome straight. Moreover, my 45 shavette shaves aided me in my ability to use a 7/8 straight razor. I did my usual WTG and ATG and achieved an IBSS because I didn't do any touchups. I got some neck irritation and did not want to make it worse. I did not get any nicks, weepers or cuts. This razor cut my day and a half stubble w/o a problem. My soap was VDH luxury and my aftershave was Old Spice. Wishing everyone a safe commute home. Result Grade 94 = A

 

Today was goatee removal day, now no one recognizes me . Feels weird to be fully clean shaven again.

I won it on an Ebay auction for just under $100. I wasn't in the market for a vintage straight or for that matter any straight, but I knew this was a quality razor in mint condition and I couldn't pass it up at the price I bought it. In reality, these razors command upwards to 200 dollars and more, so I got a great deal!

That's good insight, Randy, and you're making great progress with straights.

Skin stretching aided by alum is critically important to make your facial and neck contours as flat as possible. I try to shave the flat areas or facets as much as possible. I find some way to stretch the skin being shaved using my off-hand with nearly every stroke of the razor. I'm either sacrificing the closeness of the shave or risking a nick or cut if I don't. I use the toe end of the blade for detail work. This might work better with a shavette, since the blade is shorter than the blade on a conventional straight razor. However, I'm not sure how you could use the heel end of any open blade for detail work in places like under the nose, for example. I also use the toe end of the blade in the hollows of my neck. I'll have to see how detail work with the heel end of the blade will work in that area. I've got something to check out on tomorrow's shave.

 

Today s diving was for work, I collect sea creatures for personal and public aquariums. I will look for some pics from my last spearfishing trip. Nothing photo worthy today
