Well there is a massive snow storm a brewing in our area and so what to do for today’s soap? Stirling Weekend in Malibu! If I can’t be on vacation at least my face can! Reached for a New SC replated in 24k with a long, thin handle and loaded it up with a Crystal blade. Lovely 2 pass DFS before jumping out into the snow!

I have one of these in the mail on its way to me now. It's my birth year (and quarter)! Can't wait.

How does it compare to a Fatboy? I was planning on getting a Fatboy, probably one refurbed and rhodium plated by Razor Emporium, but I'm wondering if it would be superfluous now.

You might as well get a cheap beater for a Fat Boy on the first pass. If you have to try one don't spend big money on a custom razor you'll have a hard time offloading later on when it gets above a certain price point. You can always offload the beater for what you paid if you get it cheap enough then upgrade. Buy smart not emotional.

To your original question Slims are like a slightly more aggressive Fat Boy and I think a little more smooth when set equivalently. A Slim on 4 for example is roughly equivalent to a Fat Boy on set on 5. Besides the weight and handle length the major difference is Slim has a lower head profile so it is easier to shave with under the nose and such.

My personal opinion is Fat Boys are over hyped and over priced for a daily shaver from a performance standpoint unlike the Slim. Don't let that preclude from getting or borrowing one to form your own personal opinion, just don't get caught on buying it at the over hyped price.

The black tip I posted a picture of shaves like all the other black tip variants I've used. Nothing special about this razor except it is one of the least common styles they produced of these between 51 - 52 and only one produced with a metal knob, the other variants all have plastic black knobs. If you like something mild but not as mild as a blue tip the black tip is the razor to go for.

very cool.. the mildest tto i have is a z-3 tv ss, a d2 tv flaretip ss, and m-4 black handle ss.the rest are various rockets and crats.then prewar ,flat bottom techs and news..so not really sure where a black tip would fit or compare.. cheers..

I went with another classic today - a mint X-4 ball end Tech. As usual, the blade was a Voskhod This was the first classic Gillette I bought.
