March 2 SOTD:

Razor: PAA Starling V2
Blade: Gem Stainless
Brush: PAA Atomic Rocket
Lather: Sudsy Soapery Uplift
Aftershave: Sudsy Soapery Uplift

I was up at 3:00 AM on a Saturday, so I did not pull out the SRX this morning. I went with the Starling again, and I once again, I got a nice shave out of it. Two passes and DFS. The drag was not quite as noticeable. I did play around with the angle a bit, but even when flat against the skin, with this soap it wasn't quite as draggy. I did angle it so the head was just off the skin for most of the shave.

This soap is also a recent acquisition, and it has a lovely lemon scent. There is a slight earthiness as well, but pretty straight forward Lemon. It is slick and cushion. The soap can hold quite a bit of water, and honestly I probably loaded a bit too much. With a little less soap, I could have added just a bit more water, but as it was, I had lather dripping from the brush. I look forward to a few more shaves with this one, but it seems to be a top notch soap.

I agree that businesses often make very poor decisions for a variety of reasons, Paul. Unfortunately, those decisions eventually result in bad and sometimes unfair outcomes. However, sometimes changes occur that are outside of a business' control. An example would be a business that is suddenly impacted by tariffs...while trying to compete with other companies that have no such tariffs. That becomes an almost impossible situation. In those cases, businesses must change in order to survive.

I don't mean to trivialize the impact on workers and families. It can be real and painful. My job was eliminated due to some business changes. Thankfully, I was in a position to retire. Unfortunately, some of my friends didn't fare so well. Others, though, are doing fine because they have embraced the changes.

It's a tough and competitive global business climate. The best advice I can give anyone is to pray first, pay attention to industry and political trends, grow your professional skills, actively and measurably contribute to your company's bottom line, and always be ready to make a change. Sorry to get on my soapbox. It is really tough.

Nice summary, Jim. Do you feel it was the change in soap that ended up reducing the drag, or the technique?

 

And honestly, changes in technology drive a lot of necessary changes. Look at Block Buster video. There was a time they were a thriving. Business, but Netflix and streaming video services changed the market. They failed to make the changes they should have and now the whole company is defunct.

 

Thank you, Clint! I would not normally be fully prepared to recommend them, as I always like a few shaves first, but I think this one is a safe one to go out a bit early.

Thank you, Jason. I would say the soap was a contributor, but the biggest change was the angle of the razor.

I did the same. I need a new razor a lot less than I need a new hole in my head, but the New SC sounds interesting.........

 

I got a big Stirling shipment in, mostly bath soaps. I did manage to snag a Nag Champa shave soap before they disappear until 2020. Looks like I got one of the last ones he had in stock - they're gone now. I wish I had been more timely and been able to grab the matching AS.
Also got a tub of DG Dirtyver and one of WK Cuero Oscuro (plus four WK sample scents) from a BST. Very interesting scents.
I would think that, unless there's some sort of odd chemistry between soap bases and scents, it would be prudent to use only one or two bases. Surely it would translate into less work.
