Absolutely, Rick...there is no right or wrong. It’s all in however you achieve the best results. Some guys exclusively bowl lather and that’s what works for them. Ditto for those that face lather. I can get a useful lather with a bowl, yet I’m seldom as pleased with the quality of it compared to face lathering. Plus, it adds an extra step. I’ll use a bowl for samples, but that’s about it. For me, it just seems easier to control the amount of hydration and density by face lathering. So long as you’re using shaving soap and a brush, it beats a can of overpriced Edge goo. :)

Sorry to hear it, Chris. Know that the 30DC prayer circle and knitting club has your back, brother.

    Fantastic news, Andrew! Congrats!

Thanks gentlemen. We had a great day today, and my Bride continues to feel better. The PT is certainly helping. After PT, we picked up more moving boxes (packing little by little), checked out the progress on the house (painters are almost finished), and ran some other errands. As we were getting home, it started snowing. One to two inches of accumulation is predicted tonight. This is definitely the last snow of the season! :)

Chris thanks for this saying. It is the best I have heard in a long time. I hope everything works out for you.

I just got in from work and took a quick shower. I was scrapping some old warranty parts today and got real dusty, sometimes I have to get off of the desk. Anyway, I splashed some of the Stirling Sharp Dressed Man aftershave splash on and I can say that SDM is officially wife approved!;)

I am a 4 pass shaver. DE blades two and out, Feather Pro Artist Club blades four and out. I do not wait for them to loose their edge, I could probably get another shave or two out of them but why risk the chance of a sub-optimal shave?

I usually do X-strokes and change direction every ten so I change my grip every ten. Don’t worry about it, it is not a race, as long as the blade is flat and light pressure you’re good to go.

I’ve found this discussion interesting as well, Jim - and thank you for getting the ball rolling with your initial question.
I’ll throw out another question to go along with it. How many of you (using DE razors) ride the cap, and how many don’t? I’m not judging or keeping score - I’ve often wondered and this seemed like the perfect conversation to jump in and ask. I’ll fully admit that while I usually ride the cap, I don’t always.

From what I’ve experienced, riding the cap is a great equalizer between various razors since the angle of attack is the same. I can fully understand where various blade gaps feel different when using the “standard” method. I believe it was Joseph @Primotenore who ran some experiments with an adjustable, varying the gap adjustment, yet riding the cap - and the shaves were all about the same. Forgive me is my memory is off.

I did one shave awhile back using a Gillette Tech, without a baseplate. Sounds aggressive, right? By riding the cap, it felt pretty much like a shave with a Gillette Tech. Granted, I took it nice, slow and easy since there was nothing to protect my mug if I got off kilter.

So, let’s hear it, fellas....fess up...
Who rides the cap. Who doesn’t?

I must confess. In my weakness I have been found riding the cap.

The only true deliverance is going straight.

Beautiful set up and shave today, Jason. I hope you continue to feel better. I'll replace an Artist Club blade after seven shaves. It could easily be used three or four more times if I wanted to push it.

I'm a shallow angle shaver. Am I perfect at riding the cap? Probably not. In my opinion a light touch makes up for imperfections in my angle of attack. Anymore I just go by feel.

Thanks Danny. It brings back good memories of folks looking for opportunities to tell me, "Sorry Charlie!" Thanks for sharing the classic commercial. I enjoy watching commercials and TV shows from that era.

I probably do it more than I realize. But, I will say that when using something like the Fatip or Gillette Old Style I focus on riding the cap more. Keeps me from opening that angle up and bleeding.
