I’ve found this discussion interesting as well, Jim - and thank you for getting the ball rolling with your initial question.
I’ll throw out another question to go along with it. How many of you (using DE razors) ride the cap, and how many don’t? I’m not judging or keeping score - I’ve often wondered and this seemed like the perfect conversation to jump in and ask. I’ll fully admit that while I usually ride the cap, I don’t always.
From what I’ve experienced, riding the cap is a great equalizer between various razors since the angle of attack is the same. I can fully understand where various blade gaps feel different when using the “standard” method. I believe it was Joseph
@Primotenore who ran some experiments with an adjustable, varying the gap adjustment, yet riding the cap - and the shaves were all about the same. Forgive me is my memory is off.
I did one shave awhile back using a Gillette Tech, without a baseplate. Sounds aggressive, right? By riding the cap, it felt pretty much like a shave with a Gillette Tech. Granted, I took it nice, slow and easy since there was nothing to protect my mug if I got off kilter.
So, let’s hear it, fellas....fess up...
Who rides the cap. Who doesn’t?
