Wanted to get the general shape together with limited time today. Dremel with a cutting wheel followed by a 60 grit sanding drum to get a rough shape. Taped them together and then taped my template on top. Continued with the sanding drum to even up the edge and start to radius the edges. Tried something a little different this time by using a 240 grit sanding disc on the dremel to help with the shaping. Then did 220/400 sanding by hand to get here. Still got quite a bit to go but I think the idea is coming out. Enjoy your projects. Tom
Thank you sir. Interesting with this one... the button is creating extra thickness, but I knew that. The weird part is the silver settled quite a bit. Looks really bright on the inside of the scale but much darker on this side. I might try continuing to sand until I see a color change. My forearm is saying no.
Thanks Scott. I hope to do them justice. Appreciate it Jim. Just finished the first round of a super glue finish. Figured for fun I would take it through a hand polish, and show some of the issues with a glue application. I think I got all of them with this round.
So I became impatient... I like to use the cheapo thin super glue as I feel I can control the application better. Well, I grabbed a thicker glue, realized I had no thin, and figured why not give it a go. Should have waited. So I have some trouble spots that I am sure you could easily see. The red circles show where I sanded through the glue application, which in this was 3 applications of thick glue, letting it dry for a few hours in between. Easy to pick up as your sandpaper will change from white to the color of the wood. The yellow were low spots in my scales. I knew I had them. Most of the time with thin glue, it seems less noticeable, but not with this thick stuff. And the blue circle shows where I should have stayed sanding with 400 or 600. These show as shiny spots. You really don’t want any shiny spots as you move up the grits, but definitely not past 800’ish. But here is what it looks like when you say “heck with it.” So 1st application is done. I will start another round tomorrow, after some more sanding. Probably buy some thin to get back to what I’m used to. Tom
But I do think the HD button effect came out even a little better than I planned... Pretty transparent and clear with the resin. And the side shot shows how close I got to the top of the button. Don’t think I could have gone thinner. I like that side angle. Tom
Looking good Getting the HD emblem to show through clear was my biggest issue also, I went with Epoxy since I was setting in G10 Twill I used a flame to try and get all the bubbles to rise out as it was setting got close to perfect by not quite there
Thank you. That bubble seemed to come out of nowhere. Nothing all day... went to bed... woke up and there it was. But it is growing on me. Got a chance to finish the finish . Almost sanded back to bare material, then used thin glue. Really like working that much better as I am able to lay down a smoother coat. Did 4 coatings with 2 hours to dry in between. Sanded 400/600/800/1000/1500/2000 then Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound, followed by a round of Flitz, then 2 coats of Renaissance Wax. Much smoother and less imperfections. And a side shot: Now on to the wedge. Carbon black sandwiched in copper is my plan.
