I finally joined the 400-4 club. The next step will be getting off the couch long enough to restore the handle and reknot. I am torn between some sort of nice synthetic or a nice Silver tip from Maggards or something.
Looks great! Can't wait to see the finished product. That knot looks pretty good. Why don't you give it a week of use?
I am not sure on the knot other than thinking something nice since I spent some cash on the brush. I really like all of the APShaveco synthetics and the TGN Silvertip, so I was thinking of trying something similiar. The super high density Maggards fan knot it tempting but I am not sure how it would look, and I have never tried a fan before. I have some thinking to do.
I think the R-400 ferrule will easily accept a 24mm knot. The Omega 10098 is listed as a 27mm. They have a glue puck that flares at the bottom. I squeezed one onto a B-400 ferrule with thin walls / oversized socket by squaring up that flare. The R-400 ferrule is thin walled and curves in at the opening. Might be possible to remove some original metal and open up the aperture to accept an oversized knot. Pictured below left - R400 ferrule with the inward turned lip, center is a standard B400, right B400 thin walled for oversized knot.
I finally had a chance to put in some time on the 400-4 brush. So far a huge improvement, but, frankly, I don't know how you guys with the mirror finish do it! It is a lot of effort to get a good finish...at least for me. I am happy with what I have done so far, but it isn't yet where I want it. I think I will start again at 320 and work up. I may grab some mother's aluminum polish and/or steel wool too. I have a SHD Maggards 2-band knot and a TGN Grade A Fan Silvertip on the way so might use those, but I am not 100% yet. I have so much admiration for the work represented in this thread now that I have worked on one. Well done gents!
