It depends on the direction. First pass for me is n-s(ish) and I shave the same side as the hand. Second pass is ear to chin, I find it easier to shave the side opposite the hand. That maintains a pulling motion rather than pushing, if you can picture that. And that is what I'm going for. After the second pass, I use my right hand mostly. I use the left as much as I feel comfortable, which still isn't that much.

My first pass is north to south checks and neck - right hand right side of face - left hand left side of face

Second pass on my cheeks is done from my ear towards my chin - left hand right side of face - right hand left side of face

Second pass on my neck is south to north, all right hand

Third pass is 45 shoulder side to chin on neck and cheek while south to north for the sideburn area - right hand right side - left hand left side

Fourth pass on neck is from ears towards my Adam's apple. right hand right side - left hand left side.

Fourth pass on chin and fools pass - I hold the razor with both hands and go south to north.

I have observed videos of quite skilled open edge shavers that only use one hand.

I use both, but it changes depending on the type of stroke used. For instance, my left hand shaves the left side on downward strokes, but I use the right hand for upward strokes in the same areas.

I'm not convinced working with both hands with a safety razor is required. For the most part, I learned to use both hands mostly with straights. I did fine without it, but I wish I had bought a shavette to help figure out my grips, strokes, etc. and practice without a blade. If you go that route you may want to look for one you may want to use later.

Good luck when you make the leap. You will find a lot of great help here!

@Killerflyingbugs, Stephen, as you can see, everyone shaves differently with straights because everyone's beard grows differently and everyone finds their comfort zone when shaving with a straight razor. There's a basic foundation as to when to use your off hand which is downward strokes on your non-dominant side of face and neck (righty, then left hand, left face and neck /opposite if lefty) and non dominant hand to dominant side and vice-versa for upstrokes. This is just a recap to my earlier suggestions to your question. Don't worry, we will be there for you when you come over to the Dark Side.

Very nice head and face shave .
The Shick (I believe last time I posted it was told its an E3) was nice and aggressive. Who knows with the Canadian versions since its hard to find solid documentation. I should write these things down for future reference. @jtspartan help refresh my brain please.
The Williams lathered exceptionally well with the Surrey brush w/ TGN synthetic . 2 passes around the globe and quick clean up with the Dickinsons . A nice splash of Clubman took me back to my childhood days of getting a haircut (lol) with my Dad. Snowing tonight here ....yes its Canada! Happy shaves to everyone.

    SOTD:
Today's shave was another supermarket shave and surprisingly one of the best up to date. That lion just keeps surprising me, ive forgotten how quickly and easy i can get a BBS shave from it, and that's saying something considering it costs 25 rand! I managed to figure out that it's the South African copy of the 7 o clock sterling, I'll put an image of both below.

As usual the feather performed absolutely fantastically, even on what is now shave number 24. This blade has absolutely shocked me, its taken my shaves to new heights and if it makes it to 30, ill definitely consider buying more even given its high price. Ofcourse i bin blades when they tug, but until they do i just keep using them.

The arko proved once again why it is my favourite soap, it always performs flawlessly and believe it or not, i love its scent!

As for the Brut, im super glad that we can still find the faberge brand new in South Africa, fantastic stuff.

    Razor: Lion DE
    Blade: feather hi-stainless (24)
    Soap: arko shave stick
    Brush: dischem synthetic

@Killerflyingbugs I learned how to do the different passes, different grips and built muscle memory using a CJB shavette without the blade. It’s a safe way to experiment without blood and find what works for you.

Wow, 24 shaves on a Feather, most impressive.

Thanks! Im pretty sure it will make it to thirty, that lion razor is super light, and it didnt tug or struggle to shave at all, so it still has life left.

today is another trip up to the mainland, I will be Miami bound in a few hours. I am going to try a Sally beauty down here that carries Clubman. Last one I checked had none.
I may also try to find an antique shop if I have any time. One can only hope.
