  5. MAYhem 2019

    28 May, MMXIX A.D.

Day 28 - Feather day two in Weishi

...and it was a lot like the first day! More storms today. Quiet evening planned reading and catching up on life. Other than that...all is quiet in Colorado.

Have a great evening and a pleasant Wednesday!

    :)

  10. I have never used a Japanese style shavette, so what I am going to say may or may not assist you. When I went to straights with only 16 shavette shaves under my belt, I used the same angle or a little less of an angle than with the shavette. I used the handle as a guide to get the correct angle. Again, I haven't used a kami razor, but I would think the same principle would still apply. The good thing is that you want to be good at open blade shaving regardless of the blade length. I understand the longer length can be intimidating, but once you get 15 to 20 shaves on the books, then you will be looking back and saying that I should have done this sooner because it is so much fun. Just remember, I will be 64 and I am somewhat klutzy. With my pedigree, I am a shaving miracle that I can use any razor and get excellent shaves. So if I can do it, then you can as well. Remember, respect the razor, but don't fear it.

  13. Thanks to the 30DC bad shaves are few and far between. When they occur it usually because I forget one of my rules.

  14. When I researched 'edge forward' shaving, I considered the Artist Club Shavettes. There are 2 styles. I have read where users said the SS version required a steeper angle. Here is the Feather chart.

It appears your clone razor to be similar to the SS version. I chose to avoid Artist Club razors because of the more limited blade options, but I understand them to be capable of delivering incredible shaves.

Next time you make an attempt, try one cheek or both cheeks, North to South, one pass. Finish with another razor. It will take time to get comfortable, and that is what is needed most. Try not to push it. I don't care if you have to do that for a month, it is better than injuring yourself. Two full passes first time out with an open edge razor is a tall order.

    Good luck

  15. Thanks, Jim. No, the bowl is from a puck of Crabtree and Evelyn Sandalwood that I couldn’t get to lather well 3 years ago.
  16. Thanks, Danny. I have come to really like this beehive handle as well. Large Omega boars are always a favourite too.

  17. I probably lack some of the motor skills to do those short deliberate strokes. It always seemed hard for me to restart where I left off. I could never get it, so I decided to focus on longer strokes and feel the blade on my face.

Just another option for folks to try. You may wind up doing 4 passes like me though.

  18. A great combo, Jim!
Love the Monobilt, and the new soap sounds like a winner, Jim!
Love the whole look of this, Clint! Is the Myrsol Limon a fave?
Great stuff, Blair! I haven’t gone that long between shaves in well over 3 years, I believe.
Well said, Joseph. I like pushing my lathers to that level of consistency most days. I think too many try to look like the dude on the Arko stick...
    Love the colours, Andrew!
    +1
I hope Sherri got released today, John. Thinking of you both tonight.
I am a fan of Fine soaps as well, Danny. I have never tried that Snake Bite, fwiw.
    Wonderful combo as usual, Keith.
The Rolls aside, Robert, it sounded like a very good shave.

  20. I didn’t like the SS style because of the bulb at the end, the DX felt and uses angle closer to traditional straight.

    I’m a 4 pass shaver too.
