curious why does the R41 count as open comb.... technically its has "scalloped safety bar"
i'm not knocking it. it is a great razor
im running head on a weber handle
it currently is in top 3 running for best DE shave.
i'm currently running side by side tests with a fatip
while not a OC the 3rd in the running is V3A

 

The only reason is that Muhle for whatever reason calls it an open comb. It's clearly not.

I have read that it was once an OC but haven't seen any pics or bumph to back this.
I would call it ridged rather than scalloped.
Imo there is a hybrid that performs exactly like an OC and that's the Red Ring.

 

My shaky memory says the original R41 was one made for them by Merkur - the same Old Type style OC Merkur still makes. The Muhle R89 OC, on the other hand, was made for them around 2009 by Fatip, and looks just like a Fatip Grande, with the same proprietary cap screw.
Shaking off the cobwebs and and going back to the couch...

If the original was like the Merkur 41C then it would have been a mild but decent shave.
I like Fatips but why do Muhle have to go outside to make a proper OC?

I should've known you'd have them.
Is the 2011 as unforgiving as it's reputation?

 

Hehe no not my photo. I'm not enough of a fan of the current R41 to seek out the 2011, though I have done some cap swapping .

Well sourced on the pic.
I was once told that an EJ DE89 cap on a modern R41 gave a similar shave to the 2011.

How do you like the Tatara? I’ve been thinking about getting one, but I heard it has negative exposure so I’m not sure if I would like it or not. I don’t need a crazy amount of blade feel. I just need enough to know where it is.

 

A new more aggressive Tatara is in the works.

I really like both the Safety Bar and Open Comb plate. Neither is very aggressive and both have a very narrow optimal shaving angle. If I do my part the razor is efficient as any I have tried. I find it shave a lot like a D plate Karve or a standard blade gap Wolfman Wr-1 in terms of efficiency and blade feel. Like @jmudrick indicated they have a more aggressive razor in the works.
