What Straight Razor Have You Honed Lately????

This one made me laugh when I saw it on a recent. Most Wade & Butchers are confident: You Lather Well I'll Shave Well, The Celebrated, For Barbers Use, The Clean Shaver, Masonic etc.
This one is not so confident.
Worked up to 3 layers of Kapton tape before I got a good edge.

 

Took a mystery stone for a test drive. A unknown slate delivered a keen edge to my Wilhelm Mandt. Did a smooth one and a half pass shave after linen and leather

It is not "noisy" it is SINGING!

First edge of my own on the black-scaled Filly 14 Sub Cero. For the time being I’m using 1 layer of 1 mil Kapton, but will likely re-hone at some point in the future without tape, I just don’t use tape on razors in my rotation unless they’re framebacks or ‘purty’. The usual suspects did the heavy lift, 4k Shapton Glass and Nakayama kiita. The finisher was a pretty blue-green asagi that’s also a new arrival, so we’ll see how that goes. This SC seems not as hard as the user SC in the blue scales, but maybe I’m imagining things.

How are you guys getting such small bevel lines on razors when honing. Every razor I have honed the bevel line is huge compared to what I really see on other pics.

 

Wedges = 100% bevel. Near wedges = a lot of bevel. Super thin blades like Filly, King Pelican = super narrow bevels. Especially if the grinder is good and the steel will support a thinly ground edge

Also, depends on how worn your spine is. Use a couple of layers of tape on some, with large bevels.

It all depends on the razor....
I’ve been told by a couple of honemeisters.
That bevel size does not indicate a decent bevel.
And you can have an uneven bevel, size wise and still have a appropriately sharpened edge.

 

Technically true but it certainly takes better steel and better grinding to make a thinner edge and thus narrower bevels.

Absolutely, this is the definition of modern Thiers-Issard, great steel, uneven grinding = wavy bevels, every one that I’ve had shaved like a million bucks. Not much to look at though, if you look.

 

Is there a way you can tell if a razor was honed with tape on the spine before if you don't know.

 

Yes. Take a Sharpie marker, etc and color the bevel with it. Make 1-3 super light passes on a hone, without tape. If the razor was honed with tape the marker ink will be worn off up on the shoulder of the bevel, not the edge.

 

I’m still @ $50. Out of that million!!! I’ve heard similar about the TI. If I can’t figure out on my next off days... i will sell or send out to pro.... again.... I thought my skills were very good until this TI

 

I will have to try that on razors I haven't honed. The ones I've honed do shave decently but I think I can still do better. Ok think I've highjacked this thread enough. I'll start a new thread.

 

Japanese Kamisori, "Tsurayuki "

This was a touch-up. It just wasn't as smooth as I liked, so I decided to touch it up with a very hard JNAT, and a few Nagura Slurry stones. Then topped it off with and Arkansas Surgical Black stone. It is now scary sharp.

This was a joy to hone. It was straight, hard steel, and immediately took a sharp edge. Finished on a JNAT and an Arkie Surgical Black.
Very very sharp.
