Looking at the Gillette razors I have ended up with, I realize I don't have one from 1913 or 1914. There just were not too many Gillette or ABC made during that period. 1913 shows the production of only 147,567 razors(C260239-C407806) and only 170,553(C407807-C578360) in 1914. Who has a razor from either of these years? What set is it a part of?
Isn't that a 1912? 1912 C80509 - C260238 1913 C260239 - C407806 1914 C407807 - C578360 1915 C578361 - C911806
yes sir, a canadian one though so not sure. serial #on shaft, no gillette marking on baseplate. canada 1905 patent on outer handle.. silver plated..
My notes suggest 1909 was the last year for Serial No. on the stem/shaft, so you might want to reconsider that date. Although I have a B281649 stem stamped Single Ring.
It is a Canadian "thing". There is a UK serial number "thing" and a Gold thing too. For example, even though serial numbers beginning with with "G" are generally understood as being from 1918, there are those gold razors marked with a "G", but clearly earlier than 1918. These are the early razors that got the G designation because they were gold. Then there are those that went to the UK that had the cap stamped as well as the top of the comb stamped with the Diamond. The G-in-Box(predecessor to the G-in-D) that had the "F" serial number but again, clearly older than 1918. It has been suggested that the Canadian "C" razors were "Cased Single Rings" and the "PC" razors were "Pocket Edition". Whether the C stands for Case or Canada becomes a matter of semantics. The location of the Canadian serial numbers are also different than the US Razors. The UK Razors also had different stamping locations.
thats cool sir, thank you..i scored this at a local antique shop some time ago..hasn't seen the ebay circus..in a dusty box long forgotten..
I have seen more 3-piece razors after 1909 than Single Rings. The 3-piece razors were really being pushed and in many cases, given away because the money to be made was related to the blades, not the shaver. Making less than 200K razors in 1912, 1913, and 1914, actually less than 500K total during that span, it's hardly a wonder there are not many to be found.
I’m not as familiar as I’d like with the Canadian Plant’s history. I believe production was happening in 1906, burnt down in ‘07, rebuilt and production resumed. Whether the s/n overlapped(C 11111, PC 11112, PC 11113, ...., C 11511, C 11512, C 11513) is still up in the air. My best guess is your razor could be during the 2nd year or 3rd year of production, depending on output, but where that fall within the fire is anyone’s guess.
Hi folks, I haven’t checked the date code to see for sure when exactly this razor was made, but it is a US made C series Single Ring from around the timeframe you are talking about. I haven’t had it out from its place in my display in a long time, so please forgive me for its dusty unpolished appearance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
