For those of you that have used one or both how does the adjustable stack up shave wise? Do you find it gives a close and comfortable shave at the more aggressive settings? If you've compared the two how do they stack up against these OC's we've been discussing?

I sold my Fat Boy and my slim adjustable is sitting in my Sterilizer. I never use it. The shave from the open combs is much better to me,, and the shaves from the SE are better then that. Oh and palamolive shave stick is veddy nice too. <click>

I have no ideal why my computer went back to working. WEll the router did anyway, But for now it is working.

    Morning all

Hey Fuzzy. Welcome back pardner. Here's another one for the bunch. A new straight right out of the box. Would it require honing w/ a stone or is it ready for the strop and shave? Maybe it differs by company too so what about Dovo? Anybody familiar?

I don't think any of the razors for sale new from the factory are shave worthy out of the box regardless of what the manufacture says. Most sellers offer honing service for an extra 15-20 dollars.
You will also need a strop right off the bat since this is needed between every shave.

I haven't touched any of my adjustable in months.
OC's, slants, and an occasional SE, Tech or Straight to mix things up.

Mom's old place got broken into again, it's vacant in a bad area of town, gotta go file another police report...Arggggg!!!!!!

Hi Shep and Fuzzy, Cal, good to see you back online.

    Hey Shep,

I like them, but I'm kind of a noob, if you don't count my years shaving with DE and straight razors as a teen. I recently picked up a Fatboy on a a PIF over at B. Here's a copy of a mini review I did on it:

    Hi All,

A few weeks ago Chris (ctakim) put together a PIF of a Q2'59 Fat Boy.

When I figured out what and where this was:

I was lucky enough to get this:

I've been wanting to try an adjustable for a few months, and was looking for a Fat Boy (I was born in Q2'59, so this was exactly what I was hoping to find). The condition of the PIF is this: as soon as I buy a Fat Boy of my own, I PIF this along to the next lucky person (and so on). Also, ctakim and I both thought I should post first impressions of shaving with a Fat Boy.

So, first I'd like to say that Chris is awesome for passing this along and coming up with a plan to keep paying it forward to other folks wanting to try their first shave with one of these. Thanks, Chris!

Okay, on to impressions from a guy new to shaving with a Fat Boy:

My expectations were high, and I've not been disappointed. I most frequently shave with a late '40's SS that belonged to my granddad, so I'm most comfortable with fairly non-aggressive shavers. The Fat Boy with the adjustment set on 2 or 3 shaves just like the late 40's SS, but the added weight makes it easier to use. The larger diameter handle is more comfortable in my hand.

I've dialed it up as far as 6, where it shaves a lot like my Gillette Old. Again, the added weight and bigger handle make it feel better to me. I like the fact that I've got a razor (for a while) that I can use to get a feel for various blade angles. It's a good teaching aid as well as being a great shaver.

When I've had 3 days of growth, I've started at a setting of 2 and have dialed it up to 4 for my 3rd pass. This works really well. It's nice to have one razor that can do this.

I really enjoy this razor! Now, I'm looking forward to finding a very clean E2 and PIFing this one along to the next lady or gent.

Good to see you, Brer Wabbit! The easiest way to create wild speculation about your sanity/whereabouts/fate/intentions in a virtual world is to have a significant piece of computer hw or sw just quit working. Strange. Welcome back to the world of the virtually living. :D

Yes, it does need to be honed. Don't even experiment with it, just pack it up and send it to someone that's great at honing. It should set you back a couple of sawbucks or less and is worth every penny. You've got a strop, yes?

After almost a year of shaving with 3-pieces and regular TTO's, I decided I was ready to give my '59 Fatboy a run.
I've been through about three different blades now (IBP, Derby, Gillette yellow) and working on the fourth (Feather), and I'm dialed up to 7.
Three passes + touch up gets me to the point where my cheeks are a little sensitive, but not really uncomfortable.
With the Feather I probably should have dialed it back to 6 for the first couple of shaves, but it hasn't bothered me enough to do so.
The weight is great, but I can't seem to keep my fingers at the base of the handle.
I'll likely go back to a three piece after this blade is done. With luck, my re-plated NEW will be back from Bob's by then. :D

Sorry to hear about your mom, Bong. Hope she's not too rattled and am thankful (as I know you are) that she's okay. Dude, one word: Pullman. ;)

    Hope you're doing alright otherwise.

    And hi there, MsB.

I love my slim adjustable. I set it at 5 and it shaves very similar to a Red Tip. By comparison, my sheraton shaves at about a 3. I'd say the Star SE I've used shaves at around 5 or 5+. I used to own a 1970s black handle adj. Never liked it. Don't know what was wrong, but it never shaved as good as my slim.

I love the open comb SE Fuzzy lent me. It's a Star brand, and looks identical to GEM and EverReady razors from the same time period. I do not love my open comb micromatic. See my first post for today for why.

    Hi there Tom!

Thanks for all that Tom. And thanks Fuzzy and Bong too. I've spent months figuring soaps, creams, blades and what not. Now I'm in the mood to experiment w/ razors. What I liked about that OC Bostonian was it's more aggressive than anything I've used. I find I need that aggressiveness or I have to keep shaving the same areas over and over which of course irritates. Anyway now I'm thinking perhaps an adjustable could give me the same results as the Bostonian (since they are difficult to buy). I've been researching the Progress, the Futur and the Fatboys this morning. I'd like to give one a try.

If anyone has one to share I'd appreciate giving it a try. PM me if anyone is interested in this. I'll cover s/h and what not.

As for the straight I don't have one, but a nearby shop sells Dovos for 100 bucks. My b-day is coming up and the wife would get it for me if I give the go ahead. I'm just not sure how hip I am to get into straight shaving. I'd love to try it of course, but there's a lot of extra equipment and expense involved. Don't know if I want to take all that on. So no, I don't have a strop, but I know I'd need one.

You know, I want to say that Dave (being the guru of all things SE) recommended the MM or G-Bar to the SE-beginner for some reason. I only went with the 1912 Ever Ready because I'm a sucker for a pretty handle.
    :happy102
I'll be giving mine another try, I'm just not highly motivated to do so at the moment.

Thanks Tom. You are right never had any issues when I was in Pullman, heck my places were pretty out of the way, people probably didn't even know my place was there in a couple of the places I lived.

Hi MsB. how is WI? we got a surprise dusting of snow this am, but it's melted away already.
Used the R41 6 times in 3 days, ummmm that might be overkill. It killed my skin..

Shep you can get a used straight for 30-50 dollars shave ready if you buy from the BST's My first was 35 dollars and the seller agreed to give me 2 free honing sessions for the cost of shipping.
I have a futur that's not being used, but it's also in storage so not readily accessible.

Yeah, if I ever do it I'll go the used route Bong. That's why I wanted to know if a new one would need honing or not. If it didn't I might consider it, but since it would require honing I'll pass. Dovos do look nice though.

Thanks for the thought on the Futur. No worries, I'll use the Irish in me to guilt trip somebody into loaning me one. Where's Rodd at??? :D
