Bill, I hear you, and I definitely don't encourage you or anyone to start down this road. As a side note, I'm careful to show extreme restraint with this stuff. Alcohol abuse has taken its toll on my family, and I'm careful not to be the next victim. Likewise, I don't want to cause problems for anyone else. If this ever becomes more than a passing interest of mine, it all gets poured down the drain. To this end, my Bride and I are accountable to each other. I have no time or interest in overindulgence in alcohol.

Being an engineer and a lifelong Kentucky native, I enjoy touring distilleries and seeing how each one puts their spin on making bourbon. Some things are fixed: use of new white oak barrrels, at least 51% corn in the mashbill, etc. so the manufacturers have to find other things to vary in order to set themselves apart. Along with the science, I like learning about the histories of the various distilleries and meeting some of the people that have influenced the industry over the years. I have picked a few different bourbons to try and discern the subtle differences. It's sort of like trying to detect the notes in a fragrance. I'll sometimes compare what I detect with some of the expert reviewers. In extreme moderation, I don't believe it has a negative impact on my health.

On the distillery tours, you don't see a bunch of drunks giving and taking tours. You see a lot of different folks that are genuinely interested in some aspect of bourbon. You see a lot of couples where one, or both, seem to enjoy it. A typical tour guide is an older gentleman that likes bourbon, is a good story teller, and appears to be active and in good health. We took three different tours at one distillery recently, and the tour guide was quick to let us know that we could participate in only 1 tasting session. That was perfectly fine with us. In fact, my Bride skipped most of the sips offered to us except for the bourbon cream mixed with root beer and paired with a locally made bourbon ball. :)

So, in case you are wondering...ice cream or bourbon? The answer mos def is ice cream. :)
