Why do some (vintage?) shave brushes have a screwed cap on the bottom?

    Going by the picture, this one is specifically made to keep a piece of styptic for those occasional cuts. Good for a travel brush for those who use styptic pencils.

    Just a wild guess, possibly a "Styptic"?? Not sure, just a strange hunch. :D

    Incidentally, styptic pronounced backwards is kitpits which is Yiddish for something I'll make up once I've had more coffee.
