So this monster coti arrived yesterday Quite dished as you can see. I wanted to try and not lap it maybe keep it for wedges because of how much I needed to lap and because I knew I would end up into the blue in some parts. Sadly it was just too wonky to save so I had to lap it down. Before I started the lap the glue gave out and the bbw that was glued on is now off. But still a nice combo stone. Because of the dish I set off to do the rough work on the deck. Took me almost 30 minutes to get to this Another 30 more to get here Finished finally. Into the blue slightly but it couldn’t be avoided, overall really happy with this stone. Now for testing!
Haha I’d say about 320 lol. Yeah I don’t have a lapping plate big enough and this was the easiest way to get the worst off before I cleaned it up lol
I think you said once you used only a Coticule. Are you going back to a former progression? Or, is the convex still a part of the process?
Honestly it just depends on how I’m feeling lol. Some razors I still use just the coti on them. Others I’ll finish with the convex ark or jnat.
I have two Shaptons coming tomorrow 5k and 8k. I already have a 1k and 12k so I’ll have a good progression of stones. I’ve been using film for a year and a half but decided to go with synthetic stones for convenience. I finish with diamond pasted balsa so how I get 12k doesn’t really matter. I’m not a hobby honer but I do hone for the occasional newbie.
Coti in a couple of days ago and I got around to cleaning it up and lapping it. It’s a hard stone, waxy complexion, and I’m getting it broken in.
Jnats arrived yesterday, preliminary tests are very good, all 3 razor finishers. The 2 small ones seem excellent. The stone on the left in both images is the same stone, it’s tan on one side and blue (asagi) on the other, a two-sided stone.
This is one I have never seen before. It was discovered by a picker friend of mine. He was hunting in the hills of New Mexico. This is a interesting piece of history, a double dip of twvo good names together. A labeled Shapleigh Hardware Lily White Washita. Shapleigh Hardware has its place in history. Among many other things, they were known for there branded razors, knives, axes, cutlery, and the Diamond King Razor Hone. This is the first natural oil stone using the Diamond Edge name that I ran across. "Diamond Edge is a Quality Pledge" was one of there slogans. A nice thick 6x2 inch stone that the seller stated belonged to there 69 year old grandfather who passed in 1971. Box, stone and label are in a great condition for its age. Nice addition to the Washita rock pile Last picture with it cousin, a Diamond King Razor Hone in the groovy deco aluminum embossed case http://www.thckk.org/history/shapleigh-history.pdf
My latest stone project. Picked up a soft shale in a roadcut in Colorado a few years back and finally cut it and sealed with Gorilla brand clear glue. It has a fine scratch pattern on its own and leaves a frosty bevel after the nagura procession. The large nagura is cut from the same rock and makes a thick olive drab slurry. I'm very pleased with it.
Franz Swaty Vormals Marburg Austria It arrived in decent shape, but needed lapping and beveling of edges. I was only able to go 320-600 grit. I ran out of the others. The owner before must have used it as an oil stone, because it was beading water pretty good. I've not lapped a Swaty before, and it lapped pretty fast, with plain water and a little soap, to clean the oil out. I need your advise as to the highest grit, to stop at. Also, what is a Vormals??? I know in German, it translates to "Formerly". Before After
Two nice scores today on my working vacation at a new flea market. A Coticule and a Thuringain are making there way home with me. The Coti is a deep rock style stone measuring 5 x 2 1/2 x 1. The Thuri is a banded, blue-green, Barber Gem sized stone measuring 5 x 2 1/2 x 3/4. It may have started its life as a Escher or SRD, but alas, no label
A pair of wild find stones from the past month. A 5 x 2 1/2” and a 7 x 1 1/2” were rescued from flea markets. The 5” is the same that is pictured above, but after a bath and a lapping. Some nice Belgium Nuggets
