I've read somewhere that the guy that was running it, retired or some such. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to drop an e-mail and find out...

    'morning Bill!

I've tried all the links and email links from that page with no luck. After a good bit of googling, it appears that the owner of the parts store had moved to the Phoenix, AZ area (I can't recall exactly where, Mesa maybe?) and has passed away....

I was afraid that would be the case. Oh well. I guess I just have to be careful when I pick up a Rolls and make sure it is good condition.

Thanks for the info. If I get the one today and like it then I will want to pick up some more when I can find them.

I believe there's a guy at SRP that's made some strops for them, and they're cheap. It shouldn't be a very hard DIY project either as long as you get the thickness right.

Now that I am actually looking at the Rolls in detail... the strop is something I hadn't worried about until now. But being just leather should be fairly easily to replace. Looking at some of the sites above it looks like you occasionally completely remove the strop to work on its condition anyway.

So, you should only hone when needed... However, as long as this would have sat unused, is it safe to assume that it doesn't need it?

I am starting to think that the Rolls research is just putting me one step closer to straight shaving...

The leather should be easy to replace, as long as the thickness is the same. The system has a spring tensioner in the operating handle that supposedly keeps the correct tension whilst stropping and honing. Changing the thickness of either would in theory throw it off.

I did remove the strop when I messed with it, it's easy. Pry up the end that's not clipped down and slip it out.

I disagree about the honing. It's sat for who knows how long, therefore the edge (IMO) has probably deteriorated and/ or oxidized some. I gave mine a good healthy honing until I saw a shiny new edge on the blade, then stropped until it looked smooth.

Funny you should say that, check out my SoS for today. It's like the bastard child of a straight and a safety razor. I think it could help while transitioning from one to the other.

Hey Dustin, I see by your SoS you used that vintage Old Spice. Now that is some good stuff. I really like mine and find myself using it quite often. Now I'm going to have to try to find some more.

me too, though from the size of the puck and how little it took to get enough lather for 3+ passes, it'll last for quite some time.

I guess the tone of my statement didn't carry through. I meant that I agree with your statement.

Eww. That looks sick. :sick007 Of course I did put it in my watch list to see how much it goes for. I watched one last week go for $66.00 plus shipping. It was NOS of course, but still thats way too much for me.

I dunno if these would quite hold up to the quality you're looking for, but we've had really good luck with Spirit. You might try them. Of course, we've only ever dealt with their brick-n-mortar store, but they have decent quality costumes... much nicer than the crap they sell at department stores.

    Good luck!

morning folks. the wife and daughter are much better today. turns out that in addition to recovering from illness, daughter's cutting a new tooth.

had an excellent shave with my slim today. dialed it up to 7. super smooth and no irritation.

oh, and the whole dreamworks vs. pixar thing is very true. I've watched countless hours of the products of both of those companies (yay kids!) and must say that assessment is pretty much dead-on.

Samuel L. Jackson went to that same school of acting!

Then there's the squinty-eyed, gruff-whisper school of acting which claims several alumni of note:

    Jack Palance
    Clint Eastwood
    Stephen Segal

Gilbert Godfried dropped out after passing the squinty-eyed part, but couldn't handle the whisper half of the curicculum, so he transfered to the same school as Pacino and Jackson to finish out his training.
