My first entry here. Got these back Saturday from a friend who honed them for me. I haven't been using my straights much for a few years and am way out of practice. I hope to give them another run this Wednesday, I definitely need to work on my technique, but the shave went quite well. I did a final cleanup with my resurrected schick hydro-magic, which I forgot to put in the picture. I'll have to make a post about that razor sometime.

That is a beautiful razor, what are those scales made of? It looks like Opal. That's also a great watch.

Fon Golden Star. First real shave with this blade and it was just perfect. Always a fan of Japanese razors, they are slowly taking over my den lol.

Interesting razor, Basil, I always regret selling a NOS Fon Golden Star, they say never look back but I do occasionally think about that razor.

Very nice shave, from a razor I learned to "Respect", and for good reason, from past blood lettings. I had a super smooth 2 pass shave, that left me BDBS. I thought it bit me, but only shaved a little skin off. No blood, or weeping, but it was close. I don't know what it is, with this razor, but it is a lesson teacher. Off by a hair, and it gets you. Very very sharp. I would love to know the manufacturer.

Razor- Respect "4". Best Silver Steel. Extra Hollow Ground. Made in Germany.
Brush- JR#262. Whipped Dog Silvertip Badger. Starting to shed some hairs.
    Soap- RazoRock XXX
Aftershave- Shulton Old Spice. Mmmmm Mmmmmm Good.

Gary, it could be, especially if you like it. I am in the camp of you are more likely to keep using it, if you enjoy picking it up. :)

Personally, I like recommending a 6/8 just because a little width seems to be more forgiving. And any hollow grind is fine, just don’t normally recommend wedges to start.

And it is all about the edge. You want to have those first shaves with a known good blade. Feel free to shoot me a PM... glad you’re looking to try.

Gary, I started with a 5/8 half hollow. I do like Tom's suggestion of 6/8 though. A 'known' edge is critical.

If you go for it, I'd recommend you to dedicate to the learning curve. I heard folks say 100 shaves. I began to feel better with tool handling in 2 weeks. At the end of the first month I committed to not continue finishing the shaves with a secondary tool, straight only.

In my experience, my shaving ability with every other razor was greatly improved.

Take it slow and sensible, you'll be fine.

thank you sir. i am most grateful..i know it will be a slow process for me..getting a tool in hand and learning the grips etc will be my first step..

The last few shaves with this razor I have noticed a slight fall-off in sharpness, it's gone beyond just stropping so only one thing to do I arranged an appointment with Mr Chosera, decided to completely kill the edge on this razor with a few direct light strokes on the corner of my 1K Chosera, then a complete bevel set, quickly through my progression Chosera 1K, 3K, 5K, looking very good Snow White 8K, Naniwa 12K finally Mr smooth the Suehiro Gokumyo 20K, stropped 60 linen 60 leather and the final test this mornings shave, the edge went through those whiskers like an hot-knife through butter sooooooooooooooo smooooooooooooth. :)
