received what I believe is a 1906 Single Ring Old Type today as a gift from a family friend...she found it at an estate sale and picked it up for me....it's in a nice wood case, has a blade case, and 3 King Gillette blades in the green wrapper. From looking at the Gillette dating website, the serial number falls in with the 1906 date, although it has the patent date of Nov 15 '04....

 

That is sweet... the shave from my 1909 single ring is outstanding.. What kinda shape is it in>

 

Looks to be in great shape, just very tarnished.... can you use a liquid metal cleaner on these? I can't imagine trying to use a cream like Maas or something in all the little crevices between the teeth....

I'd think some of that liquid jewelry cleaner might be the answer there, but I've never tried it.

I think we can call it Spring up here now. Been busy with the clean-up and Easter company. How's things down at The Hutch?

 

Busy day but good some family and friends over. Fried fish and shrimp had some jambalaya. Just relaxing now.

 

I made ham, mashed taters, baked beans, egg bread, and a bunny cake. Won't need to eat for 3 days.

Somewhat sarcastic... Unfortunately, people tend to take characters that reflect some of their hidden part of their personality. Being in character allows you to be who you truly are under the guise of "it is only pretend".

Very nice! The old style had the 04 patent date on them for a long time. My 1912 still has that on the handle. As far as I know they used that stamp until Jan, 1920 date starts appearing on the handles (with the thicker cap old style and the NEW improved).

I used Maas on mine. Run the edge of a polishing cloth between the teeth like you are flossing them.

Went back to the slant today. I think if I had to narrow my "collection" down to two razors, the slant would be in there. It is just a pity that the head doesn't come off of the handle.

Rodd, I know you wear Adidas now and then... Anybody else here use that A/S? It is an OK scent and my wife likes it, but.......

 

Is it the Merkur Slant? I got one in the mail this weekend and have gotten three really excellent shaves in with it. Which blades have you been using in it?

 

Yup... Merkur HD Slant... This morning it was loaded with a 7 O'Clock Black. Previously, I had used a 7 O'Clock Yellow in it. I have had nothing but excellent shaves from it.

 

Is there a regular slant and an HD Slant, or is it the same thing? Is this the same thing as the Sledgehammer? I know almost nothing about Merkurs (this is my second one). I'm running a Feather in mine and it's been excellent.

 

I only have two Mekur, an HD and the HD slant....

As I recalll....

shorter light handle = classic
shorter thick handle = HD
long handle = ?
long handle with diaganol knurl = barberpole
barberpole with a slant head = sledgehammer

 

Interesting. Are the heads and handles interchangeable? Could I put the Slant head on a barber pole handle? I believe I have the same two Merkurs (three now, won one of those funky mustache/eyebrow razors on the Bay for 6 bucks. oops) as you do. Well, I know that I have an HD, and if I recall correctly, the handle on the Slant is the same, so I guess that'd be an HD Slant, though without looking at it at the moment, I wouldn't know for sure.

 

Yes, the HD slant is a slant head on a HD handle. Some of the merkur models are press fit and you can't take the head off. I wish I could, I would love to put the slant on different handles. I am not the Merkur expert I stick mainly to vintage razors... so I will let somebody else chime in before I make a major error.
