Anyone here have a lathe that has a takes a MT2? I accidentally ordered a MT2 drill chuck and MT2 taper screw mount and my lathe is MT1. I ordered the replacement parts, but the company I bought the originals won't exchange. If anyone is interested let me know, we can work out a nice discount. ;)

Anybody here ever turned acrylic? Do you use the same tools that you use for wood, or do you need a special set of gouges and whatnot?

everything I've read about is using the same tools

You use the same tools, but you turn slower. Set the lathe to a slower rpm, and take your time. Acrylic melts.

which brings up my next question... would it be safe to run a power drill on a rheostat?

    hurts like hell....

Just back from the Orthodontist .

The woman installed brackets in my teeth. I thought afterwards that wasnt so bad untill she said ok and now im gonna pulll the wire thru them ! oh LORD
CRAP ! now I know how it felt to be a woman in the 17th century when they had to wear a Corset ! feels like all my teeth are SQUASHED .

She told me how to clean the teeth each day. terrible really and where food gets stuck and to buy little 5mm toothpicks...

    I got a recipy for a mouthwash .
She said tomorrow the teeth could hurt.

Well 2 hours later im in terrible pain already could barely eat the fish and bread I bought.

well this is it for me for 9-12 months wearing a brace. when the teeth are all straight another sirgeon will then cut my upper jaw in 2 pieces and correct my bite. the missing bone he will get from my Ribs.

those who have good teeth ! dont mess them up take my advice FLOSS !
and use mouth water for real.

Just a little heads-up to those of you with pets:

Harbor Freight has an 80 piece mini-rotary tool set for about $10. Load that thing up with a sanding drum and *BAM* poor-man's pedipaw! It really does a great job. You just have to be careful not to grind into the quick and not bump your pet's pads. My cat, who absolutely hates having her nails trimmed, and whose nails hang on ev-er-y-thing settled in and enjoyed the soothing vibrations as I trimmed her claws. She went about three times as long before her nails started hanging stuff again. With normal clippers, it's less than a week before she starts snagging... with the dremel, it's been a few weeks.

it's not particularly safe to run with a power drill, period, especially if it's on....:D

Tried this once before... Dog now runs when she hears the sound of the Dremel. I can hold her in my lap and trim her nails when I need to but can't touch a nail with the Dremel. She also hates it if somebody turns on the either the air massage (or regular massage) on the recliner. I think she is very sensitive to vibrations.

Thanks for the heads up, he is looking for something different though. I actually just joined that forum today. :)

I have. I use the same tools, but like mhdagley said, turn it slower, and make sure your tools are very sharp or risk melting and chipping.

Hey "The Jim" - I love the new avatar!

Is it OK to run with a rheostat?

I dont see why not. Try it and report back. Tried it with a router and it said no.

Wait a minute.... Are you insinuating that it is time for me to trim my avatar's nails?

I've been a member there for a while, but haven't been very active...as this woodturning bug has bitten me pretty hard, I'm afraid I'll have to sacrifice more time to participate over there some....guess I could give up eating?
thanks! I actually saw it over at aforementioned forum....

and running with a rheostat - OK
    running ON rheostat - difficult
running connected to rheostat - potentially harmful
