I just finished up a trade I did on here and received a 1930’s Gillette “NEW” the one that came in the Gillette “Big Fellow” set. They also call it the “Bar handle” . I cleaned it up real good with a tooth brush and dawn. Going to shave with it tonight!!!
What you have is a nice NEW Long Comb on an Uncommon Bar Handle. It very well could have been a part of the Red & Black Set. Here is how it might have been sold 80 years ago: The handle is hollow, so if you want more weight, you can add it, as some have done. Enjoy the shave.
Thank you so much yes I have watched Matt from Razor emporiums Razor archive YouTube series where he thoroughly go through all Gillette razors. He always said gillette always made the same razor only with different boxes that’s what chsnged the name lol.
Mine is a New long comb. I have what is I guess an Old, but it is a short comb (also a great shaver). Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
My first NEW was a short comb. I had it replated. Also, here is the difference between the short comb (left) and long comb (right) NEWs.
These are the 4 head assemblies(L to R). Long Comb, Deluxe, Short Comb(2nd variant), and Short Comb(1st variant). The handles(L to R). Deluxe Uncommon Bar, Slim Common Bar, Common Bar, and Common Bar. There are 6 different Bar Handle configurations: 2. Deluxe Uncommon Bar 3. Uncommon Bar 4. Common Bar 5. Short Common Bar 6. Slim Uncommon Bar 7. Slim Common Bar
The image with the handles does not belong to me, but I did use it as a guide. Number 6, the Slim Uncommon Bar handle was the most challenging handle to find.
Some folks like a heavier handle when they shave, if this is the case, you can add some weight to it. Personally, I have found it to be fine for my tastes.
Huh...now I'm going to HAVE to go look at all my bar handles. Thanks @Rev579! As an act of Modification, you can drop weight down the threaded hole in the top of the handle. Lead or steel shot like from shotgun shells works well, followed by enough water resistant sealant or glue to keep in in place. Not at all necessary, but an option if you prefer heavier razors.
Handles can be addictive and what I targeted my first year. I ended up with the Bar handles in Gold, but I've not seen 2 & 3 in Nickel or Chrome. There are still a couple of vintage handles I don't have, but I am pretty content and not chasing any these days.
