Simple way to check for sensitivity. Apply lather to the inside of your elbow, the crook of your arm. Thin skin there that will react if the soap or any of it's components get your epithelial layers in an up roar. Sometime the essential oils used for scent can affect your sensitivities.
I'm with you there. I tried several razors, different blades, but couldn't find the love. I may give them another go one day. Today is not that day.
Having Teachers available shortens the learning curve. If/when there's plenty of happy users to share the right way!
Like "leather" or "citrus", Barbershop is a group rather than a tight specific scent. Working backwards from AS or EDT could be the path to finding what someone likes in the group. The oft maligned Pinaud Clubman is a prime example of what I consider quintessential BS. Very similar, but in a fancy bottle and a slightly different smell - Canoe by Dana. Breaking down the ingredients illustrates why there's so much room for variation. Top note smelled first and fading quickly; lavender, clary sage, & lemon. Once those fade the heart notes carry for longer; geranium, carnation, cedarwood, & patchouli. The base notes that linger longest; vanilla, tonka, heliotrope, and oakmoss. Any one or several of those may be in your favorite non-BS scent. Another BS will have some of them, but include others not listed. Once you identify the components you desire look into Essential Oils of that specific scent. Using witch hazel, alcohol, glycerin, shea butter, etc you can build a custom post shave blend suited to your likes. It'll help you find the soap you want, too. Or add scent components to an unscented product for a customized experience.
(How's that for weird science Paul @Paul Turner ?)

Good prescription, Joe. Give respect, receive it back. That's a life lesson some folks never comprehend.

I'm actually amazed when they get one on me the first try. My past medical issues/history made me a walking pin cushion and I have deep veins and rollers. I've had as many as 8 sticks to get an IV in during a CT one time. I've had IV insertions in both arms, hands, the vein just under the thumb and even in my neck as the only options they can find. A bit of irony this time - she actually had the vein on the first stick......and pulled it out by accident. It's just how things go with me and needles. I was terrified of needles 11 years ago. Hated them, feared them. Then I survived 2008. I learned a couple of things. First of all, needles are the least intrusive thing they can do to you. Stick away. Second, naso-gastric tubes are my new needles. I never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever want to deal with those again EVER!

If that razor gave you a burn your doing it wrong or something is wrong with it.

I'm glad the MRI went well, Neal. Praying for good results and answers. I've had the hand injection before too. I'll even suggest it if the nurse seems tentative. Thankfully, Count Dracula works at my doctor's office, and he can tap any vein.

Comfortably Numb on the headphones == good. No comments on your river of liver. ;)

I hear you, Paul! I am 64 and sometimes I forget where I park my car. I exercise almost every day and do Sudoku and other puzzles to keep my brain sharp. I also like to research on the internet and read interesting articles on diverse topics.

That's why I like this place! I learn something with every post! I'll give that a try. Stropping on my neck was not pleasant! ;)

    Enjoy your shaves,

Sudoku's great for the mind. I enjoy it. And I'm an internet research freak too. Even TSD has led me to more of THAT.

I think the problem may have been an issue Clint pointed out. I did not palm strop the blade before using it. Neck stropping is definitely not the way to go!

    Enjoy your shaves,

Clint pointed out that palm stropping a new Gem blade can sometimes avoid what I experienced. Neck-stropping is definitely not the way to begin a new Gem blade! :angry017:

Slight rash . Could be a bit too much pressure or overbuffing. Used to get it from chasing the baby on that swirl spot on neck.

Nice pic Jim! Over buffing will do that I find .

Try less pressure on the neck . Let the razor do the work. Awesome shave. Love that backsplash in the pic.
    Ditto. Well said.
See alot of hipsters around here . Untrimmed beards. They are going to put Jillette out of business if this trend keeps up.

I like the scent Paul but on the other hand I also dont like different foods touching on my plate . We all have different tastes and preferences and that is quite ok in my book. Hope your shave goes better next time.

You're right! Clint pointed out that I didn't prepare the blade properly. I should have palm-stropped it instead of neck-stropping it! ;)

My Bride is a hard stick too. She and I both hate it when she needs to be tapped. We make a point to tell the nurse she's a veeerrrry hard stick, and they will often go find the "pro" in the office. Most of the time, that make a difference.

I "fired" a nurse once for getting impatient and poking her too much. (She was the same nurse that turned down our request to pick another nurse.) It was in an open room where my Bride was getting her last Chemo treatment. Everyone heard our exchange. My Bride was rattled. I was upset. The nurse was not happy, to say the least. It was on a Friday afternoon. I told her we'd come back on Monday morning, and I told them WHO would be inserting the IV. We got there on Monday, met by our sweet nurse, and everything went smoothly. (I'm around a lot of nurses these days...99.999% of them are skilled, sweet, kind, and caring.)

Many of my kids have the naso-gastric tubes. They do not look pleasant at all, and the kids will sometimes pull them out. They can't be comfortable. I'm sorry you have to put up with these things.

P.S. My Bride takes a turbo walk, wears a sweater, runs warm water on her hands, does jumping jacks, drinks lots of water the day before...this all helps with the sticks.

Well, it isn't that my shave was BAD, just that I was in the early stages of learning to like it(an effort that, as I said, I won't give up).
