I recommend The Gourds for your bluegrass. Their music has a good beat to it. They've done some rap/hip hop covers as well that are amazing. I used to DJ at a Country Western/Hip Hop night club and always had problems finding music that would be able to bridge over from one genre to the other smoothly. The Gourds helped out big time on that one. Gin and Juice (snoop dog cover) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4hGSR5njZE Gangsta Lean (cover): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwbxuL0jqps&feature=related
I agree that blues is best live. Thats why so many of my blues CD's are live recordings. If you have heard or like Joe Bonamassa or wanna listen I recommend starting with his Shepherds Bush live recordings that can be found here I've been told. As far as finding the right style, thats another thing. There are so many styles. Night Matt. I better head that way to. Dads gotta cook breakfast in the morning. Night all!
Bertram's is a great place to shop. Nice people, good prices (at least if you're walking in). They'll be happy to show you all kinds of nice fountain pens while you're in there, too... :happy102
Also a good place to buy ink. James Partridge (the proprietor) is a nice guy. Think I'm hitting the hay too... 'night everyone.
Wow... the night crew was posting away again. Its been a while since it took this long to catch up in the morning. I don't have time to listen to the clips now, so will have to save those for later. While purging razors out of the den, I decided that the next 2 weeks I need to go back and visit some old friends or make some new friends with razors that I have had sitting around for a while. So this morning I pulled out the fatboy that I didn't sell. I don't think I ever shaved with this one before and hadn't used any fatboy since October 24 (yes, I keep a log). Very nice shave. I am quite pleased and will have to keep this one up in the rotation. I don't know if it was improved technique or a better blade (7 O'clock Black today vs. Crystals back then), but the shave was superior to what I used to get with a fatboy.
I must say, my second shave with the 1912 and a Treet blade was a bit on the rough side. I'm going to give it another shot tomorrow, but I think I'll have another blade ready to go just in case. I'm not sure why those SE blades degrade so quickly for me, but perhaps the Gems from Ted Pella will be less prone to such behavior.
good morning everyone! check out my SOTD posting (when I'm done typing this up...) Have you tried the Gem by Personnas? I'm guessing not...They're the same as the TPs. The Treets are carbon steel and the edge will degrade quickly due to moisture and rust. I'd suggest stropping the blade on something before use - your arm (ala Rollsstroping), your palm (ala D.Irving), newspaper, maybe even denim. After use, remove the blade and rub it with alcohol, or even better - put the razor (with blade still in) head down in a coffee mug and pour alcohol in, enough to cover the blade edge, at least.
I have the same problems with carbon blades. Unfortunately, I can only find carbon blades in my local area. To get stainless I have to order online. Stropping and using alcohol to dry helps. I am not sure if Matt is suggesting storing the blade in alcohol. I haven't tried that - although I have been tempted. I rinse in alcohol or barbicide, shake the razor dry, and store it in a dryer location that the bathroom. All of this just to get another day maybe two out of the blade.
I feel so sorry for you Matt... You need to get a work kit together. Most 3 piece razors will fit in an Altoids tin. Put a little cream in something smalll... say an easter egg? Then get a cheap little brush that will fit in a pill bottle or spice jar. Throw in some samples of after shave and you will have a small sized kit that will do better than what you just had. This is what I now keep in my travel kit at home (minus the easter egg... I have some p.160 pressed into a small resealable cup)
Thus far I've only used Blue Stars and one of the Treets that Fuzzy sent me. Given what I've experienced, I think I will start taking more precautions against between-shaves corrosion. At least with the carbon SE blades.
Morning all.. Just got my daughter off to school, sitting here listening to The Velvet Bulldozer. Waiting for momma to leave, then I get the bathroom for myself. Get company today as my 2 boys are staying home sick. Matt tough shave there. Kinda hard to believe that was pretty much my daily routine before. Well not quite daily, I hated shaving so much before, that I used to go 3 days or more before shaves. I've never used a carbon blade, all I could find locally were the Gems. One thing I do that I learned from LeisureGuy's book is dip whatever razor I am using that day in alcohol. I keep an old pimento jar full of 91% alcohol on the sink, and after I rinse my razor in hot water, I wipe off the soap scum then give it a quick dip.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking....to keep the water and air from the blade's edge....I think storing in barbacide would work equally well... I've got a little travel bag (dopp kit?) that I can fit everything in. I think if I come across something in an antique store, or the b/s/t....maybe a Slim (of course, I have just gotten rid of all my spare ones...), although I do have an extra Super Adj. laying around.... Thanks for the pity party! :bounce017
morning folks. today's shave was awesome- used an Astra Superior and I must say, it's a good blade so far. RE: carbon blades- I don't do the alcohol dip treatment, but I only plan on getting two shaves out of them. I *do* take them out of whatever razor (SE or DE) and let them dry between shaves. That seems to minimize rust and allow for a decent second shave. I get 2-3 shaves out of the GEM stainless SE blades as well. I like SE but it's hard on my face. I have to take a shave break at the end of a week of SE to let my face recouperate.
Good morning, folks. I was going to offer to pick up ink and mail it to you from here, but the shop you're near has very good prices. If you'd ever like to try Noodler's ink, let me know and I can pick up a bottle for you and ship at cost.
Yay! Mommas gone! I get the bathroom to myself now. Gonna go use my Clix/Derby combo since it is so mild. I'll leave you all with a lil wake up music from Freddie, the funkiest of the 3 Blues Kings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdyvPg0c6bI
yeup "Whether You Think You Can or Can't, You're Right" -Henry Ford what time should I be there? yeah, me too.... wouldn't that be across the street from?
Matt - this is the grip I use to go S-N on my neck. By adjusting how far open the blade is, you can get to more areas on your face. I'll answer your PM a little bit later when I have time to write a response.
Thanks for the confirmation on the prices, Dom...maybe I'll try to stop there on my way home, then... yeah, technically, except on my street (the numbering is really f'ed up).... but isn't across the street still a neighbor even though it's not next door?
