Ooh. Well, i imagine there will be much better explanations from much better posters than me but i shall give it a go!

    As i see it...

A soap has a few principle properties when shaving.

    A)Hydration
    B)Glide
    C)Buffer

You have other stuff like moisturising, cleaning, etc but those three are the key shaving properties.

"C)Buffer " is the cushion bit. A soap will act as a buffer between the edge of the blade and the surface of skin. The quality and quantity of this buffer is highly variable and objective depending on your POV.

This buffering or cushioning can act as a shield against a rough or sharp blade, protecting the skin and reducing irritation. In extreme cases this cushioning can cause the blade to skip over the face (rather than move "on" it) and will reduce the closeness of the shave.

Soaps i have experienced this with are typically (to quote B&M ) low structure lathering soaps which generate a thick, dense and wet lather including B&M soaps, Cade and specifically Arko Comfort which has been designed for a high level of cushion.
Soaps which have low cushion and do not provide excessive buffering are your typically high structure lathers. T&H comes to mind, as does my Dr K and Williams.

So, in the interests of synergy, mixing a mild razor with a mild blade and a soap with high cushion is going to leave you rough at the edges likewise, a aggressive razor with a sharp blade and a low cushion soap is going to leave you glowing!

    YMMV and IMHO obv.

Interesting. Thank you! I don't know that I've ever experienced that. Slickness is my goal so I add a lot of water to my soaps and as time has passed the amount of water I've been adding has steadily increased.

Fat-tober shave 1. I didn't get a weigh in on my tin of soap, will try to get one this evening. My lather was still on the fluffy side but working it on the face with painting strokes seemed to deflate it a little.

I didn't work in quite as much water as I normal would. Slickness was good and post shave was good, but not great. Back to back shaves with the Lupo and GCOC gives me a good basis for comparison. To me the Lupo is more efficient while the GCOC is smoother. Really comfortable three pass shave this morning. Finished with a refreshing splash of my mentholated SfH AS, which got a positive reaction from my wife. Have a great evening my friends!

    Hump day!

Yea, you could say that shaving soap has but one purpose: glide, and that cushion is but a buffer for bad technique.

If you thin down your lathers like you say you do, you are making high structure lathers (foam) which just provides slickness and arguably, this is how it should be :)

    NCoxSTL AAACK!

Ok boys and girls and all the ships at sea. How about some numbers from September?

We finished on page 472 with a total count of 9425 posts!! That is 1141 more than our record breaking August. Pretty incredible. Now, let's add some fun facts.

The total number of posts in September from 2015-2018 was 7996. That means we posted 1428 more times in just September 2019 than we did in four years of September. And, it means our total from September over the five years more than doubled just in that one month.

How about average number of posts per month? We are averaging 7319 this year through September, which is more than double the average of 3608 for all of 2018. That's impressive. Also, with a total of 65,870 posts from January through September this year, we have a pretty good shot of hitting 100,000 for the year.

One final fact - thanks to last September, the month of September is now the busiest over the history of the 30DC. We have posted 17,421 times in September. The next nearest - 17,152 in April over the five years. I foresee December overtaking that number pretty easily as it is normally our busiest month.......which is almost scary considering where we are.

Anyway, those are the numbers for those of us who like to play with numbers and organize our universe by numbers. It's just a numbers thing. However - we achieved those by everyone being involved, eager to help out newbies, willing to ask questions and willing to answer! As a few have said, there is no place like this anywhere online that I'm aware of. That makes us special. I'll order the short bus for the next meet up so we can be properly represented.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO HERE!
