    Really? It was good?

I haven't been holding out any hopes for it. In fact, I've had a hard time reining in my lack of enthusiasm for this movie. X3 was such a cinematic turd, I was afraid this would just be more of the same.

I honestly liked it better than any of the previous X-men movies. There was at least one scene where the effects looked pretty fake. There was also at least one major character in the movie that was not canon. That's still better than the creative license that totally butchered the identities of some of the lesser known mutants in X3 though.

If you expect the movie to follow the canon, you may be disappointed, but if you roll with the alternate stories (there are plenty of alternative lines in the comics anyhow) then it's pretty good.

[edit] The seeming lack of a Stan Lee cameo was a major disappointment, however. He wasn't in X2 either though.

I saw the copy of the movie floating around on the internet. I was less than impressed with it. It suffered from crap writing, boring story, and trying to wedge way too many mutants into the film at the expense of any story to go with them. And they ruined Deadpool.

I've learned that this is exactly the attitude one must have when approaching any comic book movie.

Heck, even Marvel comics can't be bothered with following canon, why should their movies?

I'm generally pretty open to changes if they make the movie more watchable, but sometimes things can just go too far. I'm looking at you Star Trek Nemesis.

But then, I'm "that other guy" that liked the first Hulk movie (2001), so what do I know?

I just wish we could get hollywood past this idea that we need a backstory for our heroes. Just once, I'd like to see them give me a movie where this near-homicidal underwear pervert shows up out of nowhere and beats the crap out the bad guys... no reason, just he's a good guy, and that's what good guys do. Skip the backstory, get straight to the action, and for the love of pete, 1 super-bad-guy! Just 1. And I don't need to know his backstory either. That's why Heath Ledger's Joker was so successful, we didn't know why he was crazy, just that he was.

Stop humanizing my heroes, and villifying my villains.

And again, I reiterate, 1 villain per movie!!!!

I don't think they understand what makes a comic book movie work. Just for example, take X-Men. There were some misses in the first two movies, but they hit on a good thing. There was a solid story for each movie, and they fleshed out the characters enough so that there was motivation for their actions. Then in X3, it seems like they got the idea that the success of the first two movies was mutants, so more mutants = more money. That also seems to be how they handled Wolverine. There's a weak story that falls apart, but they've managed to pack in more mutants for no other reason than to have more mutants. They'll wait and see what sticks, and then see if they can either bring some of the faces into a sequel, or branch them off into their own movie. I'm not a stickler for canon, especially when every decade or so it seems they reboot comic character origins, but don't take the essence of a character and totally destroy it to fit some stupid plot. If a character doesn't fit your story, don't just rewrite them into a 1 dimensional plot device. And don't fill space on the screen with more superheroes and villians in the hopes that more equals better. Write a good story and allow the characters to be extensions of the story. Don't throw a bunch of crap on the screen and hope you can connect the dots and create something entertaining without any character development or motivation.

Marvel has a whole slate of movies coming up in the next few years leading up to the Avengers. There's one more X-Men Origins in that lineup, but it's Magneto, which has the potential to be awesome.

They've also got Thor, Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Captain America, Ant Man, and Nick Fury on tap. The new Nick Fury is guaranteed to be better than the old one. (Anyone around here see that one? With David Hasselhoff?) They're going with the black version of Nick Fury (only character I've ever seen that had two different races depending on the storyline), but as we all know, it's Samuel L. M-F Jackson.

They scored gold bringing another 2nd tier superhero to the top with Iron Man, hopefully they can pull that off with a few of the other characters.

I agree that they're trying too hard to stick some fanservice in there by throwing in a bunch of names that people might recognize, but they're butchering a lot of it. Wolverine wasn't as overwhelmed by them as X3, but there was a bit of it. It kind of smacks of the Star Wars prequels, where the heroes encounter people they're not supposed to know until later and then it's hastily explained away in the end. (How come R2-D2 never told anyone he knew Darth Vader? Huh? And where did his boost rockets go?!)

I'm totally looking forward to a Ken Brannagh directed Thor... this is one time when an origin story can be awesome. Let's put the majority of the the film in asgard and rock the viking vibe.

Captain America is also one where an origin is appropriate. I wish they'd just make a WWII movie and the lead just happens to be Captain America. They probably won't do that, but hey, it'd be awesome.

R2 has seen enough that he's figured out the finer points of espionage. When working under deep cover, you don't want to show all your cards. As far as the boosters, they totally missed the opportunity at the beginning of Sith. After he uses the blasters to set fire to the attack droids, and the ship nose-ends, they should have had the robots slide down the floor and push him through a narrow doorway, thus breaking the boosters off.

But then, Lucas won't return my calls since "the incident."

The droids had their memories wiped at the end of the third prequel.

I've heard numerous reports that the bulk of the film is WWII and the end will be him being recovered in modern times just in time to dovetail into the Avengers movie.

That's what I've heard, too. I only hope they hold themselves to that.

Same with Thor. I think it's going to be done that way. Which totally lends itself to Branagh's knack for period pieces.

As I recall Organa only ordered C3PO's memory be wiped. But then again, they may have re-edited the movie since I watched it and in yet another unnecessary sequence changed the lines.

You're not chopped liver. Neither is the Bunny. I would have claimed you, but you weren't around at negotiation time. Besides, I do still have the 2 players to be named at a later date option.

@Matt - I have you Monday thru Thursday. Pam gets you Friday thru Sunday.
