"Grand Turk Ship" Shaving Stand by Desire Metal Works

Oh yeah. Sunday is going to have a fun shave.

***EDIT - Fantastic shave! No nicks, no cuts. Seems like with this old Super Speed that I love the BiC Chrome-Platinum blades and the 3rd shave on the blade is the best on average. I think I'm finally starting to understand the Shulton shaving soap. I kept getting 'thin' lather that broke up. I didn't know if it was the age of the soap. Maybe I was soaking the soap too long. Maybe it was my water (my long suspected culprit).

I am so used to lathering with today's super-enriched soaps and creams that are thirsty. I decided to really dial back the water. Here's my procedure today:

    1. I soaked the soap only as long as it took to brush my teeth.
    2. I dipped the shaving brush in the soak-water and shook out the brush out twice.
    3. Then applied the soak water to my face to wet it.
    4. Then ensured the brush was "flick dry" (I didn't squeeze it, but it's a synthetic, so if you use an animal hair brush, maybe give it a 'light' squeeze to find the same moisture level in the knot).
    5. I then loaded the soap and it got much, much thicker/richer than it did previously on loads.
    6. I didn't add any additional water to the knot after loading and instead went right to my face with the soap.
    7. I very lightly controlled any water. Only mere a drop or two was added at a time while lathering up. I made sure to keep the lather thick and didn't permit it to thin out while working it up.
    8. This works.

After the shave I applied some Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Mysterium Serum post-shave balm in attempt to ensure fast skin recovery since my shave wasn't as early-morning as it usually is. Tomorrow's shave likely will be with the venerable GEM 1912 travel razor and I want to try to give my skin every chance to be ready for it. I've found that nourishing balms with advanced ingredients actually do help skin bounce back a bit faster between shaves. Normally with the Shulton OS shave set I don't use a balm, but this time around I'm making an exception.

BTW, the post-shave feel with the serum and Shulton products after this shave is superb.

The old Shulton scent is one of the greatest scents ever made IMO. It's such a shame that Proctor & Gamble won't engineer their mass-production to match the old Shulton methods. Today's Old Spice is still nice IMO, and is more or less in the 'ball park' of the Old Spice scent, but I think it's pretty obvious that people could smell the difference of the two on test strips after several minutes to dry down. The newer P&G version has a much more pronounced floral on the opening that lasts a pretty long time. Up to 2-3 hours. I think about a year ago it was re-formulated yet again and the floral is even more pronounced than even 5 years ago. I have a 5 year old bottle of P&G Old Spice that smells more masculine and edgy than today's version. I actually like this newer floral-front-loaded version. It's like a flanker-version of Old Spice. The dry down of my 5-year old P&G is super ambery and nicely full bodied, but this modern stuff has a much lighter amber on the dry down and isn't as masculine and holds on to the floral top a lot longer and that floral top is more accentuated and central to the scent compared to any previous Old Spice version. Comparatively, the old Shulton is more solid-smelling and well balanced. Stronger in scent. Deeper, richer than any other version.

I like to think of the modern P&G formulations as "flankers" of the original scent. The core DNA seems to be present, but parts of the composition are either less emphasized or more emphasized and the scent "as a whole" is clearly not the same. I have no doubt this is probably from cost-cutting and using fragrance components that are cheaper chemicals or likely they are using less of the more expensive chemical synthetics in the scent and try to still make it smell like Old Spice while saving a few bucks in mass-production. Again, I still love the "Classic" version and encourage people to still buy it because if people don't buy it then P&G will just stop making it altogether, and then we really will completely lose that classic. Better to have a watered-down version than nothing at all.
