A shave I'll never get tired of..... More often, I'm finding myself picking up a shavette for the 'quick shave'. Stirling Blood on Steel 2019 soap and aftershave Stirling Tuxedo Focus R21 Evolution plastic doodad barbering tool.
Great play by play ! Meanwhile I’m still having trouble loading the blade straight. I get it but it takes forever Still getting used to my Focus R21 non plastic doodad barbering tool Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Parker SR1 w/ Vincent Sigma blades First full shave with these blades. Slightly more forgiving than a standard DE blade
I've never bee a fan of that particular loading mechanism, partly for the tedious process of loading it, partly because I don't like the way it holds the blade. It's one of my least favorite shavettes, but mine is a cheaper one than yours. How is the shave experience with yours?
I have to admit it took me a few tries to get the feel of loading the blade right .. but once I did I have to say my shave experience has been great with it . Feels balanced in hand . Using Bolzano Superinox blades get a close shave with it going with the grain and across .. still a beginner with a shavette haven’t gotten the courage to go against the grain yet I also purchased a bluebeards Revenge at the same time that I purchased the Focus. That’s a nice shavette as well .. I’ve been alternating between the two Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
All good stuff. Just keep doing what you're doing, perfecting technique with the grain (WTG). When you're ready, try across the grain (XTG) on a cheek, and then eventually you'll progress to against the grain (ATG). It's also worth noting that not everyone goes ATG, at least not all the time. If you haven't already try and condition yourself to switching hands and see how that goes.
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately switching hands would prove rather difficult due to an injury that left my right hand unstable when it comes to delicate tasks like shaving . Other than that , patience and practice for a solid one handed technique. To get a really good shave I need to go ATG .. my beard grows in every direction imaginable For now just using my DE to finish everything up Which kind of shavette are you using? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We can only work within our limitations. Cleaning up with the DE until you are ready is a sound plan. I use a variety of straights and shavettes. My preferred shavettes are usually those that take Artist Club blades. I find that they find that they give me a superb shave, while also being somewhat forgiving......kind of like a straight razor. Blade life is great too. But I also dabble with a Weck Sextoblade (post #341 above), Dovo Shavette with shaper blades, and the occasional half-DE shavette (posts #363 and 368). I can't believe that shaving has become a hobby, but that's where I am (along with many others on this forum)
I only have the Dovo shavette and I also use the Personna hairshaper blades and the regular 1/2 DE blades. I get great shaves with both, but I agree that the hairshaper blades are better.
It’s funny you say that.. I always loved getting a shave at the barbershop. And after getting one I said why not .. let me learn myself .. now I can’t stop looking at all the different products to try and research.. I know I’m just scratching the tip of the iceberg .. but it’s become a fun hobby . My wife doesn’t get my new found obsession. But she tolerates so far Once I develop a solid technique with a shavette , I’m looking to get into straight razors. I know they require more work , but some of them are just so beautiful Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Greetings Shave Fans New Stuff November for me Stirling Sheep WCS tall 2tone 24mm synthetic Symmetrical Pottery bowl Feather DX folder Feather Professional Blade (1) Brut Splash-On With a measure of gratitude to those team members serving as Sponsors on the Max Headroom Procurement Advisory Board.... Without you, none of this would have been possible. Skipped my usual dose of Proraso pre-shave for a lather up and hot towel rinse. Either of which I find a pleasant addition to my shaves. As per my custom, I like using a Stirling mutton tallow soap for new equipment test shaves. I just haven't seen anything that can top its lather. Sheep has no scent added, but that doesn't mean unscented. For those offended by the stank of a animal fat funk, steer clear. Matter of fact, Scots Pine Sheep will be the follow up for me. I might even go Electric Sheep, but never Port-au-Prince. For the cereal and soup bowl crowd, skip over this piece at meal time, you won't like the nooks, crannies and bumps that make it perfect for soap whippers. If you are shopping, I saw some nice revisions available, like an upwards extension on the band to hold a brush, and an available lid (handy for stinky soaps). These things are custom made so you can get what you want, but don't expect Walmart pricing. This bowl is uuuge..... So I had to have a new tall brush to accommodate it. Besides, I needed something to get my Artist Club blade purchase into free shipping. The Blue Ming was here to oversee the production of suds..... Flawless at that. Long before I picked up my first straight, I longingly looked at the Feather Artist Club DX tools and walked away empty handed because of the ferocious reputation for cuts or the 'sticker shock'. Then along came a guiding light showing the lower cost path. I wanted a folder for the advantage of a built-in blade guard. Alas it was mine. With some selection of available blades I went to tryablade.com and ordered 2 of the 'Mongoose samplers'. They have one of everything except the 'Lights'. USPS is still in motion on my delivery a couple of weeks later. Hence the need for the 'order anyhow', which also secured me that cool brush. Sorry for my impatience. The blade loads easily and falls right in place. I was expecting to see the edge protruding somewhat more. I thought I was opening the Super Professionals which have .2 mm greater exposure, but later noticed I used the Regular Professionals. The DX is a pleasant and capable Shaver. So far, I don't see a great advantage over my DE shavettes. Because it is machined stainless, it does have a nice heft that is closer to a real straight. I like the file jimps on the bottom of the shank and the long tang. While sizing is similar to my other edge forward tools, the pivoting point makes it the most compact of all. The compact maneuverability helps me get to my most difficult area that I continue to work on, the upper neck sides just under the jaw. The shave was very good with a quiet alum check. Finished up with my lifetime fav Brut which before wetshaving, was the ONLY name on the Max Headroom List of Most Glorious Stanks. Nowadays, there is competition, but deep down I know that you can never go wrong with Brut.
