I had the Japanese Translated years back when the whole "Discussion" kept going back and forth, Honestly, I have been soaking mine 5-10 minutes for over 10 years and they are the old formula
But if yours are working without it and you are not getting the swelling and uneven surface then go with what works. What I hate reading about is people Lapping away good amounts of hone surface chasing flat when just letting them stabilize will end that vicious cycle

Tape vs No Tape
Mostly I hone for others, so they are not my razors, so I don't want to put any spine wear they might not want, as a Honer it makes no difference to me, I will do whatever a person wants and I do have some customers that request No Tape.
My personal razors are pretty much Mint and I see no reason to not use tape, it just makes no difference..

Fact: I have honed / restored getting close to 30,ooo razors, in all that time I have yet to see a SR harmed by using a Nickels worth of tape, I have seen 1000's harmed by bad honing wearing off good steel
My advice is always the same, use tape until you see zero wear on the tape, THEN do whatever floats your boat
You can also use tape to set the bevel then drop the tape and hone the razor in, that avoids the worst of the Spine wear too



Prices I just watched a 8k and 12k used maybe 5 times go for $100 on the SRP Facebook Exchange $89 is the going price online which isn't bad since I bought mine in 2008 ish for $79

Tried a few 'jluc style' closeups. What did I get for my troubles? A cat hair on the splash bottle and stains on the soap tub...epic fail.
A very nice 3 pass shave early this morning. The CF is a super slick cream that I've started loading like a soap, tbh. Everything worked as it should and I left the house before anyone else was up to get to a meeting an hour or so away. Special shout out to the Maol splash. An excellent product.
Back at the office now, hoping for no tire fires before the long weekend.

Wonderful shave and picture, Jason! No worries about the water spots and cat hair unless, of course, you don't own a cat.

 

I have a Tabac shave stick, Daniel. A quality soap, no question. I will bring it out this month for No Repeat November for sure. I support the stereotype of Tabac- An excellent lather with a scent that is reminiscent of an elderly lady's purse. A delightful combination of certs, leather and tobacco.

 

It doesn't quite smell like an eldely lady's purse. Close though. But in a good way.

 

We have 2 cats, but on second thought I'm worried that gray hair is mine...

 

I have to rely on public transport quite a lot, and i have to have a way to make sure no-one sits right next to me (the stereotypes about introverted finns etc). Tabac seems to be working!

 

Just wait until your Veg arrives... that will be a whole 'nother level of ostracization.

 

Then i can ride the bus alone! Or i might have to drive it, if the driver bails.
