What Do Golf, Heroin and Enthusiast Wet-shaving Have in Common?

Hey, all! I’ve been wet shaving for 7 or 8 years now, mainly because I got tired of trying to make a cartridge last for three months. I have 9 wonderfully rambunctious children, and The Missus appears to be opening negotiations for a 10th. Needless to say, the potential to save money on what was my least favorite part of each day appealed to me greatly.

    It all started with:
    • EJ d89 (ebony and chrome)
    • $8 Turkish horsehair brush
    • Ceramic latte mug
    • Derby blades
    • Nivea shave balm
    • A puck of Vanderhagen shave soap from Walgreen’s.
Seven years of trial and error have led me to this:
    • Eveready 1912 se razor from the bay
    • An unexpected freebie MMOC from the same vendor who provided me the 1912 (used as a travel razor)
    • “Kong” brush by Stirling
    • Collapsible shave bowl (Stirling again)
    • CVS carbon steel blades
    • Stirling’s Glacial Unscented shave balm
    • 3 soaps--Stirling's Baker Street, Sandpiper, and Gentleman
    • My ABC’s of aftershave--Aqua Velva (blue), Baker Street, and Clubman original.
I don’t want a “den” any larger than this; I’ve poked my head into that rabbit hole... and was terrified. I do, however, like to keep informed and find ways to make what used to be an unpleasant experience less so--TSD seemed like a good fit.

So, what DO golf, heroin and enthusiast wet shaving have in common? They are all addictions I can’t afford to start.

Welcome to TSD @timabababaluka! Glad you signed up. This is your own personal thread so feel free to ask questions.
That's good news, glad you brought that experience with you. I might have questions that you can answer for me! I note you are approaching Minimalist shaving, but still retain some variation and choice. I'm learning my preferences and see no end in sight!

    Welcome to The Shave Den!

I'm careful not to spend too much money on shave gear myself. I don't want to cut into my ice cream budget. ;)

Charlie, I had some wonderful ice cream in Pennsylvania last week from a creamery called Richies in Martinsburg. How great and fresh you may asked.....you could almost smell the cow manure from the parking lot. Good stuff!

Sounds good to me, Danny. I hope you had some for me. I'm all for "farm to table" foods. Just look for a place upwind to partake, and you should be OK. ;)

Wow, lightcs1776 & brit--you all are quick to respond. Thanks!

I understand completely. Right when you think you've got it good, you see something that just might be better!

Personally, I try to follow a 50/50 allocation between the two.

I used to live in Tillamook Oregon--you could smell the cow manure from the... everywhere (makes it hard to enjoy that ice cream--but I still did ;))
And thanks for the warm welcome!

    Welcome @timabababaluka.

The Shave Den has collector type enthusiasts as well minimalist shavers, all with a common goal of improving one's individual experience. Matter of fact, a staffer here is known to be able to fit his entire shaving gear collection in a coffee mug.

    9?? working on 10??
    Congratulations!

THAT is admirable! I like a bit of variety, so I'd have to use a pretty large mug.
And thank you, my wife's CAD (Child Acquisition Disorder) has been one of my greatest blessings :)

Thank you! One of the reasons I chose TSD--I am partial to friendly, knowledgeable, and cheap people :D
