My professors who give out the slides to their lectures always have the same reason, they say they want us to listen instead of spend the entire lecture trying to frantically scribble everything down.

that's exactly what i am talking about. I have been on sales presentations where the sales rep will read word for word what I have written on the powerpoint without interjecting anything else. And they want me to find why sales are down in the data???

You scribble stuff down and can't read it later anyway.

if I don't write it down, the chances of me forgetting are exponentially greater - I did have a powerpoint to prove my figures and assertions, but.....:D

Oh dear God! Please tell me this didn't come from our educational system? At least tell me it's from play time.

I've said it before, but what I'd love to see, at the college level at least, would be the replacement of college books with something like a Kindle. It should be an absolute crime how much colleges are charging for books. It's a horrendous scam that students have little choice in. Cut out the books, build the cost of a Kindle (or similar hardware) into the tuition, and FFS stop raping these kinds with $200+ used books that are useless after one year. Not only are the costs kept under control, but you don't have to lug around a buttload of heavy books. That would be a nice, non-intrusive introduction of technology to simplify lives. It'll never happen because of the cash cow that college books have become, but a guy can dream.

My wife started going back to school to be a teacher and it kills me the cost of those books.

Education took a major nose dive when colleges and universities started operating like bad businesses with a primary goal of profit over education.

I think that I saw a university was going to do a trial program with Kindle next year. The problem they are running into is that not all of the course texts are available. I don't recall which university, but I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to find if I were motivated.

My textbook is online and the students have a CD available with it on PDF. However, in order to have those available for the students, you have to order X number of hardcopies... which defeats the idea of paperless in the first place.

Interesting. Case Western, Princeton, Reed College, Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, Pace, and Arizona State University look like they're on a trial program, but it's very limited. I hope it catches on, but i'm pessimistic. As much as I hate to say it, because it only shows how marketing driven people can be, if Apple put out something similar and marketed it right, it would go a long way towards entrenching these kinds of devices in a school setting. Just look at the massive numbers of Apple laptops in a college setting. An Apple version of the Kindle, packaged in the stale white and grey or aluminum look blob design would sell better than the Kindle and spark this kind of movement.

while that would be pretty cool, you'd eventually run into the same problem...overpriced ebooks, because hey, you HAVE to have them...but I understand what you're saying, it'd be heck of a lot easier and more convenient to carry

If I understand correctly, there's an app out that lets you download Kindle books to the iPhone and iPod Touch, though I'm not 100% sure.

There has to be something that can be done to control that problem. If a state school that receives government funding through various taxes wants to continue to receive state or federal dollars, they should be held accountable for the costs of the books. There's no way any book, let alone a used book that's already produced a profit, should be sold for upwards of $200. If that took place in any other business, that business would fail miserably or face intense scrutiny.
