My son last week upgraded his iPhone from a 6 to an 8 for ~$350.

I'm pondering replacing my phone, but I too am put off by the cost of so many of them out now. You are the only person I've run across that has a Google Pixel. They tend to be better priced on my carrier (Verizon), but not knowing anything about them, I hesitate. What can you tell me about them, good/bad/indifferent?

Don't worry in another week he will upgrade to the 11...and 2 weeks after that the 14, cuz those new models keep coming fast.

Good: No bloat (ie useless apps), latest Android system, superb camera. Meh: Battery life ok but not great. I love my Pixel 2 (2 years old now). I'd recommend the Pixel 3a to anybody. The 4 and 4XL still too expensive for me to consider. I'm on Google Fi so all in with Google and the Pixels.

I just upgraded from a Pixel 2. For my needs it was a great phone. The only reason I upgraded was because after almost 4 years the battery was going. Beyond that I was very happy. I've heard lots of mixed things on the Pixel 4 beyond the camera so decided to go with a Samsung Note. I use my phone a lot for work, and it has virtually replaced my computer. Work it not for needing it for my work, I'd go with something much less expensive on a prepaid plan.

He only upgraded due to a water mishap. and he'll probably keep the 8 for at least two years figuring he buys his own phone and he's quite the penny pincher.

Pixel 2 was released in Fall 2017 (not almost 4 years) but point taken about battery. Rather than buying the Pixel 4 this year I just bought a second 2 year old phone with much better battery life -- refurb LG V30+ - as a travel phone, audio player (headphone jack and 400GB of music on it), and sub for the Pixel when I know it would be stressed without access to a charger. Cost me $140.

    Still running a 2015 Samsung S6.
The Battery is the only thing that is any issue but still, its not so bad i feel the need to change it (doable ). Everything else works fine and thats comparing it to modern phones.

I got this S6 because i noticed that my colleagues with samsungs tended to keep them for a long time. The S6 has not disappointed in this regard. Great phone. I will be slow to move away from samsung for my next one.
I intend to use this 'till it dies completely. Phone tech. is mature and the days of "upgrading" are gone. Its just a tool so i use it accordingly.

I totally agree with you on that. I was having a conversation with someone about cell phones the other day, and I said the cell phone has evolved as much as it can. They can't go any further with it aside from upping the specifications....kinda like the razor, they just keep putting more blades on it.

Hmm kinda. Because these devices have ceased to be phones strictly speaking for many or most -- my daughter has never ever made a phone call, I make maybe 15 or 20 a year-- but are more for social media, media consumption, shopping tools, and cameras, there is plenty of room for discernable improvement that folks will pay for.

While it may be fine for bragging rights to use a 4 or 5 year old phone security fixes are a thing and using the phones beyond their good til date requires additional caution. I wouldn't plain and simple.

I actually held out on upgrading to the so called "smart phone" untill 2011 and even then I used it for nothing more than phone calls and texts. But sometime in 2013 Sprint gave me a free Note 2 & thats when I finally started using most of the available features.

One of my favorite pizza joints has a website but they’re not set up for online ordering so you have to call.

There are apps for communication: Viber, Telegram, WhatsApp, Messenger. All my friends in SE Asia (where folks treat SIM cards as disposable) use these pretty much exclusively, as do most kids in the US. The only time I make a phone call is to order a pizza or schedule a doctor's appointment. Until last year my daughter and dad didn't even have a carrier SIM in their phones (Google Fi data only) and neither had any difficulty in communication or suffered an impaired social life.
