Any old cup will work, I sometimes use a coffee mug just because I can. Sea shells work good also especially those big clam shells.
I do have a favorite razor, but I can't tell you what it is, other than calling it a Frankenrazor. Essentially a 3 piece with a Merkur base-plate, a long heavy handle from a Utopia, and a cap with lots of blade exposure off of who knows what. Gives me the best shave out of all my razors. I will list by blade type and actual razors I have. I will exclude my creations. Obviously I prefer all of mine over all othersJK Wedge blade Safety: Rapide early Ernst Scharf. With Adjustable blade exposure. SE: 1909 ER Injector: PAL Injecto-matic DE: Merkur Progress (if I ever find an Apollo or Ben Hur Mikron. That will move to the top) Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
On a side note. These may not be my best shavers for each blade type. Other than the Progress. It gives me my best DE shave. I also like my above razors so much, I have a duplicate of each. Just Incase one breaks or gets lost. I keep the spares in my safe deposit box in Fort Knox Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Take my opinion for what it is worth. I have zero nostalgia for the vintage razors as far as using them. They're great to look at and it's great to witness the old hats using them. However, I can't bring myself to use them. Even though I bought it and put it on display in my mind it's not mine to use. It belongs to someone before me to use. To use it would be theft of history. I know it's weird, but that is how it is for me. I'm just holding it for them and keeping their memory. Now, with that said I'll use modern razors without issue. Do far it is hard for me to find a modern razor I do not like. Each one had its learning curve. Once found it will give you great shaves. As of this post my absolute favorite is the Rockwell 6S Jet Black. All my other razors come in a very close second. When my collection is complete I'll post all my razors. How could a pick a favorite? It would be easier to pick a favorite child. I only have one of those. I do have to say though, now that he is a teenager, the cat has been growing on me......
i get that..and agree.the razor sets i have acquired have little to no use on them..most have sat in collections for decades.i payed well for them as i wanted near new/ nos to use..my worn in ones are display pieces or passed along to newbies to try..with a couple of exceptions..
