Sorry about the shave, Tim. Last year, a friend gifted me a Parker Variant and quite honestly, it was a terrible razor. It always would cut me or give me a bad shave. It was not my technique. It was due to the fact that the razor would not completely lock. I tossed it in the circular file. Funny, I don't have a problem with the Parker shavette.

Wow. That is pretty strange. I don't think I have a problem there, but I was very surprised at how easily I got bit with the setting just on '3'. I don't remember it being that punishing. I might put on the training wheels and dial it back to '2' next week.

View attachment 216966 February Favourites Combo #3. Picked a favourite Tobacco Tuesday combo today. Could have easily gone with the Maximo Gomez, but after finishing off tub #1, I want a bit of a break from it. Out came the Gentleman. Some of you may recall that Mrs. Spartan gently requested (I can do euphemisms...) that I pitch the aftershave, which I did. The soap hasn't made an appearance in a while and I figured if I quickly splashed on some of the strongly scented splash right afterwards I might be ok. So far, so good.
To be honest, my favourite Gillette OC is probably the NEW LC. Love the New Improved, SC and Goodwill as well. A few are currently off at the beauty salon, and this New Deluxe is a fine substitute. Seriously enjoy all the Gillette News and Old Types. This brush is one of my faves for a few reasons- it was my first dual medium handle and my first big Omega Pro. Love everything about it.
Whipped up a great lather and had 3 outstanding passes. I went to work, but realized I'm not super well yet. I was advised by my Exec. Asst. after one semi-terse meeting that I should cancel some meetings and avoid the public, especially as I have yesterday's stuff to get to. I took her advice. Went home.

OK, once again hopelessly behind. Here is my catch up post.

Monday: The next candidate from the test again bin is Noble Otter. I think it just went in the bin because it was summer, I remember it was a good performer, just a notch below top tier. This shave confirmed my recollection, good performance just a shade below my top tier soaps. This is the second shave with the Enoch, this time I tried to ride the safety bar more and the shave improved. It does have as wide a range of angles for the blade as a Cobra and not as aggressive as the Cobra either. I am on the fence on this razor, I think I still prefer my Cobra Classic, but when in a hurry and want to make sure my rushing does not draw blood it is a good choice.

Tuesday: I think I will call February a month of redemption. I am using products that were placed in the not wonderful category but waiting for another chance. Today's redemption opportunity is for this Wade and Butcher, for some reason I get the edge smooth and sharp..... but not as sharp as I like it. It was popping arm hair after it saw some laps on the pasted strop so I was hoping for the best. Unfortunately once again smooth but not super sharp, sharp enough to get a good shave but that is it, just good. I think this will be hitting the BST soon.

Nice shave today. I used The Fat even though it's not Friday, because Mitchell's starts with M and that rhymes with Monday. (Hmmm... MWF... Monday Wednesday Friday for Mitchell's Wool Fat? That would be one way to kill off this eternal puck of mine in more of a hurry...). It always gives a nice-feeling lather. Which the Chubby whips up in no time flat.

I think the Supply is my favourite injector, although Schick E and G and the PAL Adjustable are nice too. Two passes to an error-free DFS+. Forgot to use the alum, but I don't think it would have had anything to say anyway.

Osage Rub for that Menthol Monday chill, topped off with Clubman VIBR for that alcohol bite on top of it with a tropical scent finish to combat the -18C temp outside today.

Btw, Supply looks like a razor company that's going to be around for awhile: Patrick and Jennifer were always keen on quality and careful in their expansion while it was a Mom and Pop operation. But in August or thereabouts, they won the opportunity to go on the "Shark Tank", and ended up cutting a deal with Rob Herjevac for a share of the company for $300,000. So they are now well-financed with major business connections and know-how behind them...

Another one pass this morning with some major clean-up on my neck. So maybe a 1.5 pass shave. Pretty good overall. Outstanding lather from Gentleman and the JR brush. I'll be using this Speick aftershave a few more times to finish off the bottle. It's almost gone.

I have a field trip today with some of my juniors. We're going to the middle school to spend the day with the band students there. Building relationships and recruiting. Believe it or not but 8th graders in our area are already filling out course selection sheets for their freshman year, so we're getting in front of them to encourage them to continue with band.

Good morning

Terrific shave to start the day! Three passes for near BBS. Light tickle from the alum.

B&M Reserve Fern and the 30DC meet up brush from the randomizer. Hot water from the kettle in my dipping bowl and brush scuttle. Built an excellent lather for pass one. Rested the brush in the HOT scuttle. Reserve does not like the heat. The lather on the brush had almost completely disappeared. I tried working it back up on my face, nothing doing, had to go back to the puck and start over. Same for pass three. Reserve works well enough with hot tap water in the scuttle, not so much with boiling water from the scuttle.

good morning gents,tuesday shave.up early watching the weather forecast.big snow to hit today.day off .loaded a new platinum in the brit 1965 slim head flare tip,lather up the proraso blue cream with the wcs synthetic,and got a lovely 2+ pass near bbs.awesomely rich slick lather.razorock blue caps it off..love this razor,enough to own 2 of them.is my most used and efficient flare tip with this slim head.these "rockets"have regular style flare tip end caps.rather abundant here and quite a few in the wild still.unfortunately production ceased in 66 and the black handle came along after.the "all brass" days of the flare tip were over..have a fine day gents..

Between the CH2 Synthetic, aka "The Soap Destroyer" and the Mondial boar, the A&E Frozen Mojitos soap is disappearing at a rapid rate. I am not sure the soap will make it through the week. I may have taken to many pictures this weekend. On to the shave which was much better today, I did open up the cut again today but nothing new. I decided to leave well enough alone and not chase the baby. While not totally blood free, I am pleased with the improvement over yesterday. I hope everyone has a great Tuesday.

Birthday SOTD 02/04/20

Wonderful celebration of SWMBO’s birthday last night. Great workout shave this morning with my new SS Synthetic brush birthday present from Classic Shaving. It weighs 15.8 oz which doesn’t sound like much until you start waving it around during the lathering process. One of the pleasures of this month’s focus is the continuing use of MWF, just an incredible soap. I don’t know if it’s the regular post shave wash with brush squeezings or just the daily lathering process itself, but my skin on both noggin and face feel great after four days use. I wonder how I’ll feel at the end of 29 days continuous use?

In any case, a stellar shave for my birthday with one of my favorite razors - the GE Jones Shake Sharp Mark 2.0 in nickel. After stacking two original Polish Wizamet Super Iridium blades, I lathered up with my M-Bomb salted MWF, following my regular scrub with PAA’s Preshave Cube of my dome and face. My Shake Sharp sang as it mowed down the whiskers right to the skin line on that first WTG pass. I sometimes wonder if it’s possible to cut oneself with this razor. It hasn’t happened yet. The second ATG pass really only consisted of some scattered buffing cleanup! The Shake Sharp is highly efficient with these sharp blades, but not to the point of irritation as my alum block revealed. The only time I experienced any irritation with this razor was when I used stacked Feather blades. In any case, a stellar one and a half pass DFS shave for my birthday with one of my favorite razors! I feel clean, smooooth and refreshed.

This is the best Bay Rum I have ever tried, and it isn't even close. You of course get a nice Rum scent, along with a nice dose of Bay. There is no clove, as I am sure lots of people are aware. There some terrific orange zest in there and a hint of molasses. This is aged in oak barrels, and I do get a bit of an oaky/vanilla quality from it as well it is just. A well balanced Bay Rum and has long been a favorite of mine.

Primo: Please, call me Primo.
Steve: Thanks, Primo. Can you tell the viewers why you suddenly made this change to..uh, uh...
(Steve shuffles note cards) ah, TSD's February Focus?
(Primo continues his post-shave rituals): Well, Steve...it occurred to me as I was applying this
luxurious shave cream (points to the black, ceramic shave jar), that our fathers rarely had
shave dens with 20+ shave soaps, or 15-20 razors and even (Primo turns and gestures towards
his shave shelf, which is lined with all kinds of brushes and aftershaves and soaps),
15 or so shave brushes. They would have used the same products day after day. They would have also
been compelled to maintain the edge on their straight razor.
Keep in mind, Steve, that we're talking about a time before King Gillette had invented
the modern day safety razor. That being said, I have decided to emulate this practice, to honor my father and all
of the fathers of the past, who took the time to properly groom themselves before work,
or a dinner with the little woman, or any other special occasion.
Steve: That's very interesting Primo. What products have you decided upon?
Primo: Steve, I am going to use this straight razor, which was manufactured in Sweden.
It's a Heiljestrand MK32. It was recently honed by the revered @gssixgun
who holes up in an undisclosed location, somewhere in the mountains of the Northwest.
It is rumored, Steve, that Glen (a pseudonym, I believe) is a direct descendant of one of the
famous Zwilling brothers, Gottfried, I believe. I cannot confirm this, but I have it on good authority.
I will do my best to keep this edge "shave ready", sorry for the obscure nomenclature,
I get carried away on occasion. (Primo chuckles).
I will not refresh the blade, but only use the strops at my disposal.
As far as the shave cream goes, I have decided to use this cream from the country of
Belgium. They are famous for their Pommes Frites. Did you know that Steve?
(Steve shakes his head gently, indicating he did not know that)
Now, with regard to the other shave necessities, I will make a spur of the moment decision.
For instance, Steve, at the last minute I called an audible and substituted ED Pinaud's
Lilac Vegetal for the above-pictured Williams Aqua Velva.
Steve: (takes a deep sniffy-sniff and with a look of utter sublimity)

Let me preface this report with an apology. I'm sorry. I still can't get myself to say why yet, but I can at least start by saying... I'm sorry. Today's shave with a brand new Personna, and next step down memory lane was with the Parker Variant. The adjustable razor was my last DE purchase, and was meant to fix every problem I've ever had with shaving--it didn't. In hindsight, I can easily say that technique trumps tools, but back then... the Parker Variant was going to fix everything. This is also the most expensive razor I own, and was given to me as a birthday present from my mother. I loved it immediately...

... Beautifully dulled finish, solid, weighty, two-piece assembly, and adjustable. I shaved with the variant for close to two straight years.This one was purchased off the bay, and definitely looked lived in, but somehow that just added to the appeal of the thing.

Week 1 Set Up

The Shave (I'm So, So, Sorry)
The first pass (WTG) was surprising for me. I put the head on my face and rotated till I was riding that cap. It was almost like those epic moments I always I always hear about, but have never experienced... "I went through my first stroke, and it was like I wasn't cutting anything at all!" I put the razor down and ran a finger over the area just to make certain, and sure enough... I wasn't cutting anything at all. Oh well, there's always tomorrow. Ran it back and forth until it was cutting, and proceeded with the shave--the rough, rough shave. Now I've had smooth shaves with the Variant, so I know there is a sweet spot, but I was not finding it. And it was driving me crazy.

I did the cheeks and lower jaw on my left side--rough. I did the cheeks and lower jaw on my right side--rough. I did my neck on the left side--rough. I did the neck on my right side--rough. Lower middle neck, Adam's apple and upper-middle neck--rough, rough, rough. I'm getting more and more frustrated. Far left mustache, down to the corner of the mouth, and finishing down the chin--still rough. Far right mustache, down to the corner of the mouth, and finishing down the chin--still rough.

Then I hit the soul patch, started working my way down, and did something stupid. I somehow managed to place the blade down on my lower chin too hard, too vertical, and too... downward? Whatever. The result was that kick-back that throws the razor back up. Sure enough, a slice about 1/16th of an inch long. It wasn't a geyser or a gout that sprayed across the mirror, but it did bleed, and didn't look like it wanted to stop. I mourned the loss of a scoring opportunity for a razor that I really do want to keep, and (here is where the apology comes) then kept shaving.

I don't know how it happened. I really don't. All I can say is have you ever been stuck trying to figure out a problem with the computer or a phone or a kid's bicycle or whatever, and your better half said, "Are you coming to bed?" and you said, "Yeah, I'm fed up with this thing," and then suddenly it was 1:30 or 2:00 am as you slipped shamefully into bed, hoping your wife wouldn't wake up and know for sure that she married an idiot? It was like that. My shave was broken long before the blood, and I was trying to fix it. I wasn't trying to avoid the consequences--honestly, they would have visually been almost unnoticeable. And even if they were, photos of a half shave make for great copy. Really entertaining stuff. It wasn't until I was putting my gear away that I realized: omigosh! I finished the shave!.

So again, I'm sorry. I even toyed with the idea of pretending that I stopped--that's how embarrassed I was. So here, at least are what the results would have been if they hadn't earned a score of Closeness is DFS/CCS, score: 2. For comfort, the shave left me with moderate irritation, score: 2. Even without the blood, today was a mediocre shave at best. The sweet spot seemed to be measured in microns, and I wasn't finding it.

I hope next week goes better, and I hope your shaves today are all infinitely more fantastic

Skipped a shave yesterday, so today's started with ~48 hours of growth. Another hot scuttle test, boiling water this time in the scuttle, just a tablespoon in the bowl. The CMON clone with a Zenith boar mounted in it was thoroughly warmed with hottest tap water, then overloaded in the PAA tub, some lather dropping into the scuttle bowl. Created a thin lather, small bubbles, but still with slight volume in the bowl. The Zenith went to the face, instant warmth, and the lather immediately turned into a luxurious thick and silky smooth cushion of fragrant goodness. Oh my......almost worth moving to a cold climate to have this everyday (um...forget that). Today's razor (for those who haven't seen it before) is a Feather Artist Club DX, but with the scales removed. I then wrapped the handle with leather cord. Loaded with a Feather Pro blade, went for 3 passes, DFS+ result. Unfortunately this shave wasn't without a set down error during the first pass...felt this unassuming looking beast bite on the lower left neck with during a WTG swipe. A bit of a good sting for the rest of the shave, crimson very slow weeping, no extra attention or products needed to stem the flow. No biggie and only a small distraction. Finished off with PAA's Star Jelly, and then the matching Future Fiction after shave & cologne.

PAA's Future Fiction is a top favorite, marketed as a Summer Scent, but this is Texas....I keep it in rotation all the time, it's that nice, and the weather's always changing. 74 degrees yesterday, and now facing a winter weather advisory in 12 hours. Currently 40 degrees out. This AS/C opens with a citrusy musk aroma, peppery, some ginger, a little honey. Wifey and daughters approved.

Here is the official PAA scent profile: Citrus (Lemon, Bergamot & Mandarin Orange), White Musk, Jamaican Ginger, White Pepper, Haitian Vetiver, Hiba Wood, Honey Amber, Black Sage, Peppermint, Jerusalem Pine.

I would be on the fence about re-knotting your Dad's brush. I can certainly see why you'd want to keep using it, though. At the very least, I'd attempt to save the old knot in one piece.

February 4 SOTD:

Razor: Schick Krona
Blade: Polsilver
Brush: PAA Atomic Rocket
Lather: PAA Atomic Age Bay Rum
Aftershave: PAA Atomic Age Bay Rum

This is the best Bay Rum I have ever tried, and it isn't even close. You of course get a nice Rum scent, along with a nice dose of Bay. There is no clove, as I am sure lots of people are aware. There some terrific orange zest in there and a hint of molasses. This is aged in oak barrels, and I do get a bit of an oaky/vanilla quality from it as well it is just. A well balanced Bay Rum and has long been a favorite of mine.

I haven't tried Stirling with hot water from the kettle yet. It very well may be worse. Stirling struggles with hot water from the tap in the scuttle. I face lathered this morning and rested a loaded brush in the brush scuttle. Poof! No lather for pass two. Weird.

Riding the cap works with the vast majority of razors but not all razors. I have a few where I have to come down of the cap a ways and one that I have to ride the safety bar.
