Thank you Clint! A couple shaves ago, I started thinking about the RA as a shavette with a DE handle, particularly when that red dot is at 3.5-4 or higher.

    Feb. 5 Hell Week--Episode 5: "Irony Sucks"
After 4 straight days of shaving with a brand new Personna Blue Lab blade, I was finally able to relax a bit with my 1st-and-favorite SE razor: the Ever Ready 1912...

    feb 5.jpeg

I bought this off the bay (brassing, light pitting, and all), and fell in love with the thing on sight. The 1st shave sealed the deal. The SS gem blade (non-coated) is much more forgiving than the Personna DE blades on those first shaves, and the 1912 is a smooth, mild shaver. It's been close to two months since I've used it, so I was looking forward to (and expecting) a close, comfortable trouble-free shave. That was probably a mistake.

    Week 1 Set Up
    • Blade: gem SS (1st shave)
    • Brush: Kong
    • Soap: Soap Commander "Drive"
    • AS: Clubman Original
    • Balm: Nivea Sensitive Cooling

    The Shave
I thought the 1st pass went well. WTG, no issues that I could detect, and I took extra care around the set-down mishap from yesterday (seriously, who gets set-down cuts with a DE ). I started my 2nd pass, and mowed down my cheeks on the left and right side when I noticed it: a weeper on my neck from the 1st pass, bubbling up through the lather. Score of 0 for the day--shave over. And yes, I actually quit the shave this time.

Applied the AS, and a nice little sting, but also a moderate burn with it. My cheeks on just two passes are a micron's breath away from being BBS, which sounds nice, but tells me I was probably using too much pressure on those 1 1/4 passes. A pretty decent shave for just one pass, but, with moderate irritation present, not a comfortable one. I did some reflecting on the commute to work today.

Need for a Shift in the Paradigm--Close, but no Cigar!
I have been shaving for closeness rather than comfort. No, it's more than that. I have always shaved for closeness rather than comfort, and have never been consistently happy with the results. Smooth as glass--glass that has been melted, poured, and is still red-hot.

Looking back on my 1st post for February is a bit revealing: the very 1st score category listed is... closeness. I'm only guessing, but if I look back at the other posts for this month, I will probably find the same thing. Comfort's got to be feeling a bit like Jan Brady:

    "Closeness! Closeness! Closeness!"

Never fear, Jan. This is the month I get my head sorted out :D

Given my results your way of thinking is accurate. The beast will bit at 3.5. I can attest to that fact.

A decadently luxurious sounding shave, Patrick. My guess was that the Proraso wasn't going to hold up to the heat--wrong again! :happy102:

Wow. Beautiful... everything! Really like the sound of that Doppleganger. And I need to read this report right before I shave tomorrow (either that or tattoo 'Reverse Pressure' on both of my forearms). Had some pressure issues with this morning's shave, so your post is instructional and inspirational, Blair. ;)

Man, that's a beautiful razor. Brand new Feather and a left-handed shave! I think I would take that as an opportunity to grow a beard until I finally got use of my right hand again. BTW, Love that the soap you chose was "Right Handed Giant" :happy102:;)
