Thank you, Tim! I can't answer that question because I never used stones. I have to say that lapping films are the way to go for honing novices like myself. Before you arrived on the scene, I started a 30 consecutive same straight razor shaves and setup. I had used my 5/8 Wolstenholm sq pt with only 2 shaves on it after honing it for the very 1st time. I didn't have to refresh that razor during that challenge. Now, I have 32 shaves on it and I bet that I could go up to 50 shaves before I need to Crox it (refresh with chromium oxide treated strop). I am not against stones, but a Norton 4K/8K and a 12K to finish is going to cost you hundreds of dollars. I am not even including a lapping plate to keep these stones flat. I have enough films to last me years before I even want to go into stones. My films and a flat surface (template) cost me just under 50 dollars.
Thanks, Joe. That was the basic vibe I got from looking around and reading, but it's nice to get info from individuals that (a) I know, and (b) whose opinions I value.
Beautiful plus it is a present making it extra special. They are very hard to find these days. Monogramed and a present from your wife, it doesn't get any better than that. Today's cufflinks, 45 ACP along with my Omega Seamaster GMT Looking forward to the pictures. awesome! Calling @Drygulch
Wednesday Shave: Just touched up this Koraat and the edge is defiantly acceptable. So sharp that it sheared a pimple off my face and I did not even feel it, just saw the blood. Another redemption test for the DR Harris soap, good enough to use but I do not think I will repurchase it. I prefer their creams. Thursday Shave: A wickedly sharp Riga Razor left with a smooth face and no irritation. Alas on the last pass the point caught my at the bottom of my neck.
