Blade Rust Question/Thought ?

I recently used a Gillette Silver Blue in my ongoing trial of DE blades. This was the 3rd use of the first time I'd tried this particular blade. When I started my shaving procedure, I noticed a tad of rust on the bevel of the blade. In retrospect, I should have changed to another blade, but I didn't. I didn't have another blade in the bathroom with me. To make a long story short, that was not a good shave. I've learned my lesson about using a blade with any rust on the bevel.

My question though is based on this was the 6th different blade I've used in my trial, but the 1st in which any rust was seen. I'd rinsed the blade as always and had put it in my alcohol jar, razor and all, to hopefully dispel any water left behind. Is this just indicative of a cheaper quality blade, a fluke, or something I did, or otherwise?

    Your opinion/s are requested!

    :thanks:

I would never use a rusty blade.

I thought Gillette Silver Blues were stainless

    In the right environment.
    All stainless steel will rust.
That would make one wonder what happened to those blades.

GSB is a stainless blade so typically they are highly corrosion resistant, but as mentioned above, nothing is impossible.

I've used GSB on and off for years for daily shaving. I rinse after the shave in a small container with Isopropyl then leave to dry in the medicine cabinet and never had any issue with rust or corrosion on this blade.

What razor were you using that blade in?

Here is the blade in question.
It was not this bad when I used it.

    Very interesting.

I’ve left several brands of blades (with shaves on them) laying out in my staging area for days at a time without issue.

    Maybe it’s just defective.

Did you purchase them recently or did you get them from someone? Is it possible they’re old stock?

Looking at a picture is somewhat difficult.
It maybe that what ever razor it was in rusted.
The rust attached to the blade when it was removed, it looked like the blade was rusting.
I still would never use a blade like that.

I've seen rust in razors that was from a steel blade left in the razor.
It cleaned off fine, no damage to the razor.

Is it possibly a counterfeit GSB?
    Made of dodgy steel?
Here's a real one. Notice the 'i' in Gillette...the rusty one looks different.

They were a PIF from a member here on TSD. They had sent me an assortment of blades to try, so I could maybe find a "go-to" so to speak. I have no idea as to old stock?

I haven't "noticed" any rust "in/on" the razor itself, but I'll look closer and see.

    Interesting!

I put the pictures side by side for easier comparison

The razor. Not a great picture, but best I could come up with. There seems to be some discoloration that you can see, but it doesn't look like rust. It's smooth to the touch.

One of my remaining 4 GSB blades. They all look the same.

    Yes that's fine.
But whoever might have put that blade from another razor in that razor.
It's really not a big deal imo.
    Blades are cheap!
So long as your razor is in good shape.
I wouldn't worry to much about it.
Although it is interesting, because that rusty SS blade had been badly abused.

    Like I said, I wouldn't use a rusty blade.

The truth about it is I never use a blade twice.
I'm a one and done guy.
    Thanks for sharing.

OK, your blade has a thicker font for 'Silver Blue', and the 'i' in Gillette has a cupped top.
My blades are about 3 - 4 years old (yes, I bought a few).
Maybe later blades have changed the font?
I did find a really old Silver Blue here, and it has the cupped top to the 'i', although my font looks to be slimmer.
Who knows? Factory changing fonts maybe.
Never seen a blade rust like that before.
Reaction to your water (or your soap)?
