Thank you, here are two from the maker. It was a custom order and I wanted some flashy. The spine work on your Friodur is exceptional.
That is gorgeous. I'm at a loss for words. Thank you. I really like it as well. This is the second friodur I received free. The first one I got from the guy I buy the gorgeous japanese straights from sent me one on an order right before chistmas. Well when Derek from Wildwest lost everything in the fire i gave him the NOS Tripoli straight i had and the Friodur i received free. Well the last japanese straight i bought from this individual when i received the package this friodur was in the package with a note saying he sent me another one since i selflessly gave the last one away. So i am so happy to have this razor and am going to have lots of great shaves with it. I just need to touch up the edge and it will be great. The razor i desperately want now is this one. It was sold on ebay and 3 days before i got the money to buy it it sold. I had been scrimping and even sold razors to get it. Now i am hoping i can find another one and get it.
I am also a big fan of the Japanese razors, well if the are western grinds. I have one Friorur and it is a wonderful razor. Wow, free, it does not get any better than that. Good luck in your hunt for the Super razor.
Shave #85 with the Filly 14 Sub Cero ... soap was Martin de Candre fougere lathered with a TOBS brush and a splash of Myrsol AB finished up a DFS shave. Not bad for 85.
What’s your thinking about how to decide when it’s time to refresh that edge? Also, I know you’ve said you use 35 on linen and 65 on leather for your routine - do you do any stropping before the shave?
Hey @Karl G the maintenance stropping is 35 suede/65 cordovan. I occasionally hit it with flax linen about once a week after shave 35 or so. I usually don’t strop before the shave and I am thinking about that, but polished carbon steel usually doesn’t oxidize that fast, a polished ball bearing will stay bright for a long time in a decent environment unless contaminated. Basically I’ll stop when the edge is not comfortable/fun to shave with. That’s really hard to explain, and I’d refinish it now if it was in rotation, but the edge is still better than my early edges when I was learning to hone. And although the smoothness is not like freshly honed, it also is still delivering a DFS. So it’s going to go until it isn’t fun or the shave isn’t as good as I expect. My beard is about average, not super tough and not peach fuzz. Hope that this clears things up, but probably it doesn’t, lol.
Inspired by @Suhrim21 Friodur I decided to use mine for Saturday's shave. She is a full 8/8 and is about an extra 1/4 longer than normal. She does take an excellent edge.
Saturday Straights' Shave Cold Water Rinse Van Der Hagen Deluxe Jayaruh #391 Synthetic Luxor Pro Master Gillette Silver Blue CWR Pinaud Clubman The Van Der Hagen Deluxe Shave Soap face-lathered well with the Jayaruh #391 Synthetic brush. Two passes and touch ups with the Luxor Pro Master with a Gillette Silver Blue half blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse I finished off with Pinaud Clubman AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...
Keeping with the theme, Henckles Friodur 14, soap was MdC original lathered with the hippie brush, and a splash of SMN lavender finished up a BDBS shave.
Heljestrand frameback. I have really hard time honing to get it right. Speick shaving stick + superli ice tonic as.
This is a German razor, made for the French market, acquired from France not to long ago. I had a very stiff, and very smooth, 2 pass shave, that left me BDBS. Zero issues, and a fabulous razor. I chose this one, because it is a Near Wedge, and I had several days of thick growth to cut through. Razor- Puma 69. Solingen Germany. "SPECIAL POUR BARBE TRES DURE" in the blade face. Translation: "Special for Very Hard Beards". Brush- C-MON "A-4". Very old aluminum brush handle, with original knot, cut down. It works great now, and not floppy.. Not a hair shed. Soap- ARKO. Aftershave- Vintage Shulton Old Spice. "The Admiral" decanter.
I’m a bit behind in posting. Today was the PRC Siren I honed a week ago. First shave didn’t go well, but I’m chalking it up to bad/rushed prep. Today’s shave was excellent and I’m really happy with the edge in this one. I’m sure there’s still room to improve, but it was a great, comfortable shave. Yesterday was a CV Heljstrand MK6. Whoever honed this is a magician! I’ve also been a bit busy, because I got a puppy today and I’ve been making arrangements for the last couple days. TSD, meet Doug!
