    Is Derby like Arko?

    20200419_122147-1.jpeg

Being the Stirling Fanboy that I am, I only stray on occasion.

The 30DC Arko April theme always reveals deep feelings. It is a soap I may try someday, but not today. In a couple of my Shave Nation purchases Geofatboy threw in a stick of Derby along with his personal note. So, considering this kind of soap 'lasts forever', I'm good for 2 'forevers'

Face lathered with the Omega boar in the popular method. Works well, don't know why I don't do it more.

Brought out the John Jay. I rescued this 5/8" piece from an antique store for $17. The 2 things catching my eye were the French point and the mother of pearl tang inlay. If used, it wasn't much. As you can see, Mother Nature and Father Time weren't it's best allies. It has a very hollow grind and did take a nice edge. It has become a pleasant Shaver.

The best info I can get indicates that Boker was offering these 'pearl tang' pieces starting with the early 1900's. I can't find anything on the John Jay branding though. Boker is still offering razor models with pearl tang inlays today.

Light stropping laps on glass/mag mount nanocloth (whatever that is) charged with 1/10 micron cBN paste. Followed by mag mount denim and roo. The stropping gear is from Chef Knives to Go (a Max Headroom Approved source for sharp). I've begun to like keeping the strop mount in my palm over benchtop.

Great comfortable shave from an keen-edgey but not toothy tool. Not a bad shave for $17...........plus a thousand or 2 in honing stuff. Not complaining, and don't forget, this is a hobby for me, not a Walmart run.

Finished up with Pinaud Clubman. I'm not offended by the scent, but not on the Max Headroom List of Most Glorious Stanks. What I do like is the sting-zing-thing.

Thanks Patrick. My dad was a disciplinarian, but he also was an extrovert who loved gatherings.

good late morning gents..The Sunday Shave..decided to have a rest from th tech focus and continue it tomorrow.loaded a platinum in my newly acquired replacement rocket hd,built a fantastic royal forest lather with the bbj custom omega ,and got a fabulous bbs in 2+ smooth passes.with a blade gap/exposure at 5 on the fatboy scale and the weight, this series of brit bad boys are gillette's best ,well built, fine shaving non adjustable razors .imho of course.after these they declined into gadgetry and cheap parts, again my opinion, based on my humble assortment of stable mates.the #58 is the pretty version and the monobloc has grippier but more boring knurling.of course the mighty aristocrat was the smoothest with this head design.end of an era,one might say.anyhoo.capped of the fine shave with the royal forest aftershave, and a little acqua di selva cologne for good measure..have a fine afternoon.everyone.. 20200418_143216.jpg

Nice one Paul! I am glad that I am not under bondage to go with convention to only use seasonal soaps at the appropriate time. I don't have a problem using Christmas Eve or Bay Rum in the summer and Glastonbury, Satsuma or Coconut and Lime in the winter.
