It is my Special Saturday night shave!

Straight Razor Shave # 176
Dovo Special 5/8 Full Hollow Round Pt
Semogue OC Super Badger Brush
Stirling Spice SS and AS

I can't have a Special Saturday night shave unless I bring out the Dovo Special. Also, I picked out my gear that starts with the letter S. Tonight, I feel like I had the letter S on my shirt and felt like a superman! I had recently set the bevel on this razor and I got a serviceable shave, but it really didn't feel right to me. So I decided to refresh going to the lap film with the next lowest micron from the bevel setter and finish through the progression and so forth. I tested it out shaving the sides of my head and it shave, but again, it just wasn't right. So I dulled tbis blade again to reset the bevel. This time I added more torque doing 80, 40, 20, 10, 5, 3, 2, 1 laps. Used the same amount of torque and lap progressions on 9 and 5 micron films. Finished through the final 3 lap fil progressions with a light touch, but still using the same lap progressions. Stropped on linen, pasted Crox, linen and then leather. Left it in favor of my Mad Max shaves this week. Last night I tested this razor using the eyebrow test. I have eyebrows that needs to be trimmed. Well, let me say that when this razor hit the brows, you can here the razor ping as it catches the brow. No pressure and it was cool so I knew I was going to have a nice shave with it. I can't do the tree-topping hairs because my arm hair is super fine so I tried the eyebrow test for the first time. Ok, let me stop jabbering and get on with it. I bloomed the soap and used the wet brush method to prepare my beard and lather my face. I wanted this lather very wet and slick to give this newly honed razor a chance to glide on my face. Gentlemen, I was in awe when I proceeded with my first pass. My Dovo Special hasn't shaved so smoothly in a long time. It was taking off my whiskers with very little pressure. The audio feedback was fantastic! It felt like this razor was professionally honed and that's how good this blade felt. I can't believe that I completely honed my first razor by resetting the bevel and getting such a fantastic result. I could have stopped after the first pass and it would be a DFS+, but I did a total of 2.5 passes for a BBS- shave without blood or irritation. The minus designation is because I didn't do a fool's pass on the stache and very little invisible stubble can be felt going against the grain on my right neck just below the jawline. Finished with the fine scented Spice aftershave.
Well, this week I passed 2 milestones in my shaving journey. I shaved with a straight razor that was bigger than an inch wide and although it took me a few tries, I was able to hone a razor by resetting the bevel and following through with every progression to have a shave ready razor with a wonderful edge. Thanks Andrew! I did a little experiment by putting in the matching aftershave in the tub. Closed the lid and shook it. Will let it sit for awhile until I decide to use it. Hopefully, the soap will absorb the aftershave to bring back a scent.

Just the Basics June!

Brush - Stirling Pro Style Synthetic

One more shave with the Magic and Derby and only one change to the setup. Just switched Stirling synthetics to the bigger version. Same knot, just bigger. I figured this was about as basic as I can go with a shavette shave the past couple of days so that's a WIN for June! With just under a week in the month gone summer has shown up in the Lou. 94 degrees today (that's 34 for you Canadians out there) and the protest marchers were out and about. I managed to keep myself out of the middle of closed streets and such so everything went smooth. Just like the shave. (Don't tell me you didn't see that segue coming) Three passes to get a very near BBS and the alum was almost totally silent. Amazing what can happen when you spend a couple of days with a razor.

Yes, I'm doing a 30-day (or longer) focus in the kitchen. I'm getting some hands-on coaching here due to my lack of ability and/or speed. Using a shavette is easier. No shave today, but my travel gear (including Tabac - the manly stuff) is on tap for tomorrow. @Bama Samurai - Hammy on wrist.

Today was a much-needed rest day. We have a few (relatively easy) appointments tomorrow, another (mostly) off-day on Friday, chemo on Saturday, and the transplant (hereafter known as Day 0 & my Bride's new birthday) on Monday. At that point, we'll have daily monitoring until we are cleared to come home. We're already planning to return on Day 60 for the first check-up.

We got out for a walk this morning, and Kathy found our summer home. Best we can tell, it is move-in ready. There is no Piggly Wiggly in town, so it's currently a buyer's market.

Folks talked razors, honing, cars, whiskey and assorted other topics! Chris (@Bama Samurai) did a straight razor shave during the get-together. @MrEE (Evan) had to cancel. Beautiful Sunday morning shave. Up early as the contractor is coming over for a power washing of our pool patio. I needed to move a few of the yard stuff to the side. A three day process, power wash, sand and seal. The pool water is getting very murky as we speak.

The shave offered up by one of my smaller straights was fantastic. A three pass that easily did the job with the assistance of the slick base offered up by the unobtainable MLS Reunion. A classic Vetiver scent with a chaser of the PAA splash.

As I move around the yard, the steady breeze provides reminders of what a great scent this is combination presents. This is more in your face, in a good way, as opposed to my past two shaves with the Santa Fe Soap Ranch Redwood Vetiver. As previously noted in the post related to that shave, it offers a very subtle scent.

Sunday shave: Another new brush this one is also a Heritage Collection brush but this one has a gel boar knot. Today's soap is Electric Sheep, a favorite in the summer and it keeps away the bugs. It does smell a bit like OFF to me. A big 8/8 Mike Martinez was on call today, sharp and smooth as usual. It would have been an epic shave but there was a pimple and it was bigger than I thought. The razor just sheared it off a skin level with no problem, leading to some blood on steel.
