Rex Ambassador; closed comb, adjustable -all things to all people. A great razor . Were there to be only one...

RR Lupo, aluminum; closed comb - a great touchup razor. For shaving I use a titanium handle.

RR Wunderbar Slant; super efficient, no forgiveness

Above the Tie Slant S1 (closed )/S2 (OC) S1 is mild but good ratio of efficiency for it's mildness. S2 not yet used yet but supposedly more aggressive/efficient.

RR Old Type Open comb, good daily driver, not a stainless head however. Maybe too mild for me.

PAA Ascension Double Open comb (adjustable). fairly aggressive, especially if opened up a bit.

(not on display, out on loan, Rockwell 6c, Model T, RR G37)

Of the duplication I may delete,

Wunderbar Slant , too finicky for me,

RR Old type, (as PAA and even the ATT S2 are open comb.) However the head is so cheap might as well keep it around.

Vie Long Horse hair brush, replace with horse hair that does not knot, or keep it as that's typical of the material

As mentioned, this month learning and comparing the Slants and the Boar/Horse brushes
Good examples? Any suggestions of better examples? Any not novelty types missed?

It's a C-MONday!
Good morning guys!

Straight Razor Shave #183 (This time it is, lol)
C-Mon 11/16 Full Hollow Sq Pt
C-Mon Heritage Collection Super HD Badger
Stirling Coconut and Lime SS and AS

The C-Mon brush whipped up a nice lather using the wet method. The Coconut and Lime is nice clean, but not overpowering scent. It truly is a nice summer soap. I bought this C-Mon razor as a set on Fleabay awhile ago. The guy that sold it to me really did a great job honing this and the other C-Mon because I could've fnished this shave on 1 pass on a 44 hr beard growth. Of course, I like at least 2 passes to complete my shaves. So with the 2.5 passes, it was a BBS that wouldn't pass the cotton-ball test. I know some purists wouldn't consider it a true BBS, but in my world it is. Splashed the aftershave to complete this superb shave. Have a great day guys! View attachment 228821 View attachment 228821

thank you Tim.the handles that crack and split are mostly old types and early new series handles.haven't seen any later brit rfb ball ends crack.

It’ll be fine. I’m happy to say I have avoided the straight razor rabbit hole to this point. I really don’t have the time to invest the time and effort into learning and maintaining straights.

Between it being Fathers Day, Sunday, and a shavette milestone, I decided to pull out all the stops as well as all my faves from the den

Gear

Razor: Max Headroom Focus R21--the favorite shavette in my stable, sent to me by Bill @Edison Carter

Blade: Gillette Rubie (1)--a sharp, smooth blade, definitely one of my favorites.

Brush: JOmegan Boar--the best performer I have is also, coincidentally, the best looking. Jason @jtspartan crafted the handle, loaded it with the wonderful Omega 48 boar knot, and then generously sent it my way. Awesome!

Soap: Stirling Iced Pineapple (one part) & Glastonbury (two parts)--prepared and chilled with ice water and 4 Frost Drops added

Menthol: Stirling Frost Drops

AS: Aqua Velva Ice Blue (2 Frost Drops added; sooo nice and chilly)--I killed the AV, my first-ever AS to bottom out; today I am a man.

Balm: Stirling Glacial Unscented

The Shave
I struggled mightily between wanting to get the last shavette shave of my 100 run completed and wanting to put my best foot forward to make Sunday special. I like to chase the baby on Sundays and aim for a glassy, comfortable finish--DE’s are how I best accomplish this. My inner dialogue for the last 24 hours has been, “Number 100! But… chase day! But… Number 100! But… chase day!” Over and over again. Ad infinitum. But this morning I woke up with a crazy thought: the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Early in my shavette journey, I realized that I was not going to be getting BBS shaves with a shavette anytime soon. Thus, I instituted Chase Day on Sundays--an opportunity to get super-close Sunday shaves by putting the shavette down, and picking up one of my DE’s. With just one shave left in the 100 run, it was time to see exactly what I could do with a shavette. I have fallen into an automatic pattern or groove in the blade-forward process, so I took some mental notes to record what the shaves look like:

Pass 1 (WTG)
This one goes by pretty quickly, and is completely ambidextrous. It also tends to include trimming the hairline along the back of my neck. I never plan that part (as is evidenced by the fact that there is never any lather there when I do it), but it usually happens nonetheless. Now that I realize this, I should probably include some lather in those areas for pass #1.

Pass 2 (XTG)
This pass used to be the most difficult for me with a shavette. It is ambidextrous on the face, but morphs to a right-hand-only along the neck. Muscle memory has made this pass much easier, but it took the most time to get there.

Pass 3 (ATG/XTG)
The hollows of my neck… ugh! My hair grows from the inside towards the outside on either side of the hollows of my neck. Significant stretching and pulling makes it slightly easier to shave, but I still usually take on that area XTG. Everything else gets the ATG treatment, and all of it with the right hand only, face and neck.

Today was different though. If I’m chasing, the only way to catch the baby is a 100% ATG pass. It was slow going along the ‘deadly hollows’, and the resistance forces along the southernmost tip of the chin always put up an admirable fight, but with a bit of persistence and some touching up I got there--the baby has landed!

Next stop? The Radiumite Co. straight razor. Will get it professionally honed, and myself outfitted with strops and paste (most likely before the beginning of August). Everybody enjoy your Father's Day!

An early morning shave with a early evening posts. Another excellent shave with the Tatara brush and razor. I am really surprised with this boar brush. I expected a very lengthy break-in process with subpar results in the interim. Thus far the brush has been a lathering making machine that will be even better when the tips split and soften. Three passes and touchups ended in another drama free BBS shave. I will change out the hardware tomorrow. Happy Father's Day and I hope everyone has a wonderful peaceful Sunday.

Thanks, Clint! I am not investing a dime into straights. My oldest son bought me two from one of his knifemaker buddies for Fathers Day that are supposedly in the mail. He’s a custom folding knife collector. My goal is to learn how to use one. As is obvious from my post, I dislike all the maintenance tied into them. The razor I’ve been using is the one that I hurt myself with. I bought it about 5 yrs ago before I was aware of my tremors. My accident with it led to my Parkinson’s diagnosis. I’m doing this because throughout my life I’ve made a habit of finishing what I start. That’s my goal here.

Happy Father's Day to all you fathers!
The Merkur 15C was the 2nd DE razor I ever bought. I was still early on in learning about razor characteristics and just by its appearance, thought it would be a more "aggressive" razor. I really didn't even know what that meant at the time. What I found was that it is a very smooth, comfortable and mild razor.

I used what ended up being a new blade to me today. What I thought I was getting was a new pack of Made in the US, Personna Lab Blues, in the compact 100 box pack. These blades, although they do come in the same type pack just with a more updated logo, are made in Germany and are labeled "Platinum Chrome' on the blade. Either way, they were a really great blade and I look forward to using them again (I do have 99 more of them). They were part of the Father's Day gift from my two kids.

The Wilkinson Sword shave stick provided a cushy, slick lather today and it smells fantastic. I've only used it a handful of times, but I've enjoyed it each one.
2 passes for a DFS and nothing even close to irritation. I finished off the shave with another part of my kids' present to me - Pinaud Lime Sec. What a great scent and I see why lots of you have it! To me, it starts off smelling like a lime flavored green candy sucker, but then dries down to a sort of soapy Irish Spring scent.

Awesome report and shave, Paul! The big draw for the straight for me is the length of the cutting surface--cutting through a huge swath of stubble is awesome. Potential smoothness is also a draw. The ability to get a blade crazy sharp, but velvety smooth I find very appealing. Stropping? Not so much. I'm hoping it's something that I get into the zen of doing once I start, but I know that there will be mornings when I just pick up a shavette or DE simply because I have neither the time nor the emotional fortitude early in the morning for a strop session.

Thanks, Ralph! Yuh did it again! I get the same rush from using my AC razors, TIM. I like to finish things I start. This razor stared me in the eye every day for the past 4 or 5 yrs! Happy first day of summer! Well, technically second day since the 20th was the official solstice, but summer is here! Hope you had some fun on a hot day to help shake off some rust and dust from the long hard winter and spring we had. Hopefully we won't be going back to that anytime soon! Decided I'd Wunderbar it tonight with a Voskhod. Best Russian steel and a totally cool and awesome slant. Can't beat that. I wanted to use the Blood on Steel from our very first meet up in 2018. And, of course, I used the LE brush from @jtspartan from the meetup in 2019. Three passes and I'm as smooth as a cue ball. No worries at all. For those who attended the meet up last year - you were in St. Louis, or very close to it. We met on the weekend of the 21-23 in June last year. It was a great time, and I hope we can do it again next year when things have settled down.

Now, for some news. As many of you know, if not most, this thread got its start on January 1, 2015. It's the brainchild of our own one and only Chris @Bama Samurai . I was a charter member. And, as it grew slowly but surely through 2015 and into 2016, he found himself a moderator around these parts. So, he asked me to take over the day to day stuff around the 30 DC. Glad to help. And, lo and behold, a bunch of newer guys got involved and we are now the monster we've become since them! I've rarely missed a day around here and I'm extremely proud of what we have all built. True friendships have evolved from this group. None closer than Chris and I. Brothers from a different mother. Others have had the same experience and, if you come to the meet up next year (hopefully) you'll see exactly what I mean. Shaving's our game, but it goes much deeper than that.

I know some of you have noticed that I've been a bit quieter in the past several months than normal. It's been a difficult year for me on a personal level. I won't go into any gory details, but the time has come to take some time and finish up some "remodeling" I've been doing on myself. I'll be honest, it's a break I wouldn't be taking if it wasn't required. But it is, and for good reason. This will be my final post on TSD and in the 30DC for some time. No, I'm not quitting the board or the thread. I'll be back. Which means, for you in the 30DC, keep it real and keep it going! I expect to see you all and spend a lot of time catching up when the time comes. Thank you so much for all the guys here who have made this such a special place and will continue to do so.

So, with that said, I will turn the reins back into the capable hands of Chris until my return. And, once I'm back, who knows where we might take this? Or how it might have evolved as it always has into something bigger than all of us. Good shaves, everyone. You're in my thoughts.
