Thank you Joe, but I've decided that particular shave combo failed the summer test. Anyone who needs to light a match can just zing it off my face and it will be lit. This combo will have to wait to fall/winter. Lovely shave, just the wrong time for it. But I'll be doing more "experimenting" of course.

Thank you Andrew, but I'm afraid this particular combination of soap&A.S. will be a "One-trick pony". It was a wonderful shave, but it feels better for me in the fall/winter. Aaah, we try things.

The soap/AS combo gets the Participation Award for summer.

    SOTD FRIDAY, JULY 10, 2020

Welcome to Wool Fat Friday my shave brothers and sisters. Last night I did something I thought I’d never do, and that’s strop a razor mor than 40 strokes. I still disliked it, but the 70 strokes really brought back the edge back to the Dovo Special. The razor finally shaved as it’s supposed to. I've discovered that my two Feather Barber’s razors are sharper than any of the straights I’ve used. But I still was able eke out a decent two pass (WTG, ATG) DFS.

I’ve decided to ship all three straights currently in my possession out for rehoning and edge checks. I recently swapped a fairly beat up Gillette Single Ring for a recently honed Genco 35 straight razor. Included in the deal are two new bottles of Osage Rub I’ll be adding to the den. My shave buddy and I are both happy with the swap. I’ll be shaving with the two Feather SS Barber’s razors until the Genco arrives.

For my dome shave I opened up the Rex Ambassador all the way. I really believe my straight razor experience has helped improve what I always thought was pretty decent safety razor shaving. It has to do with a greater appreciation for the zero pressure shave. I was a bit hesitant at first, as my usual Rex setting is 4.5. I began the head shave with fairly conservative strokes, but very quickly developed a greater sense of comfort, despite one minor set-down error in the back of the dome. The result was an incredibly close VBBS. I feel cool, clean and velveteen!

RAZOR: Dovo Special (Mug), Rex Ambassador (Dome)
    BLADE: Suneko (1)
BRUSH: MrEE Aluminum Handled Hybrid Knot #007
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub w/ Rabid Banana Preshave Cube
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat w/ 6 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Osage Rub. Finished with Fine Accoutrements Platinum AS splash.

Thank you Gary, but my face is telling me to wait for this combination until fall/winter. I did want to give it a go, but....it failed the summer test. I enjoyed the shave, but it'll feel better in a few months-cooler season..

    July 10 SOTD Favorite Friday

    Good morning guys!

    Straight razor shave #186
    Dovo Special 5/8 Full Hollow
    JR #396 Silvertip Badger Brush
    Stirling Sandalwood SS and AS

Let the brush soak and the soap bloom overnight. Used the brush to wet my face and squeezed out the excess. Used the bloom water as a preshave. The brush easily whipped up a nice, wet lather that I placed in the face. On a 40 hr growth, 2.5 passes and touch ups gave me a BBS- shave. Did get a weeper on my neck below the jaw hinge because I used a J-hook stroke. I usually don't do that maneuver in that section, but I thought that I would give it a go. Oh well, it was no biggie. Styptic pen and cold water fixed it. I have got to say since I rehoned this razor starting from the bevel set that it really is very enjoyable to use. Double splash of the matching aftershave gave me some burn, but that was to be expected. Have a great Friday gentlemen. 20200709_155525.jpg 20200709_155525.jpg

Great shave, Joe! What was your goal by soaking the brush and blooming the soap overnight?
