Shave #141 today on the Filly 14 Sub Cero, the Latvian linen and roo strop seem to have the edge holding steady and seem to be working better. Post shave stropping was 40 Latvian linen/100 roo. At this point, it seems to have become more of a test of secondary strop components than of the edge itself. An edge with this much use on it likely shows the effect of the strop better than maybe a fresh edge. One razor maker agrees. After shave 142, I’m going to Latvian linen and back to the Kanoyama cordovan. In talking with roo fans at SRP, they feel that the leather itself isn’t much different regarding results, but being more flexible allows it to conform to smiling edges more easily. The Sub Cero though, doesn’t have a smile or very little. The strop tests are certainly interesting.
7/20/20 SOTD First shave with this razor and the best part is I refreshed the edge myself and it was my first time honing a razor. Razor: Peters Brothers Best Quality near wedge Brush: Omega 10098 Professional Boar Lather: WSP Formula T Bay Rum Astringent: Osma Alum block Splash: Ogallala Bay Rum Lime and Peppercorn. For never honing a razor before I was very impressed with the final outcome. The bevel looked to be pretty good so I went right to my 8K Shapton and then Surgical Black Ark finisher. Very good shave near BBS close, comfortable, smooth shave final results 9/10.
The shave from today’s 11/16ths was as good as the razor’s looks. Fabulous all the way around. Hot water preparation Argan Oil PSO T&H Wellington Super Badger Castle Forbes 1445 Shaving Cream Kendal & Dent 11/16 Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel Happy shaving - Karl
Thanks, next time I’ll try the @TestDepth photo perspective to get a better shot of the spine work Thanks Steve -
Going as artsy as I can this evening... H. Tonbo, a no-nonsense, classic Japanese frameback. I think this might have been my first foray into the world of Japanese blades. It was a great start! Enjoy your shave. Tom
The tang on that is razor is very cool My roo strop is my most used strop and like the draw. The flexibility does make it easier for smiling razors. I think I need fewer laps on the roo than my other strops.
Taking a break from the Sub Cero test with.... another Filly 14, Gen 1 with a coticule edge from my friend Scott. He’s a dedicated coticule honer, and very good at it. The shave was superb! Yesterday was shave #141 on the Sub Cero, and I’m testing strops and secondary stop components, The Latvian linen and kangaroo strop has worked a treat, so after the next shave I’m going to Latvian linen and my Kanoyama to see if I can tell which piece (or if both) is responsible for the improvement.
CV Heljestrand MK6 Similar to the MK32 in size and shape, but a slightly heavier grind and no heel notch. The brush is a Wolf Whiskers “Twin Raptor” from a few years back sporting the L’Occitane Plisson knot, which I still love. Great shave. Enjoy your shave. Tom
The final shave in my 5/8th and 11/16th rotation. And a fine shave it was. This is my heirloom razor from my Grandpa. It may one of my best shaves from German steel even though it is not Solingen.
