Thanks, Joe! Ben is my oldest and a grandfather in his own right. We’ve always been close. We’re way beyond that bonding point! It's hard to believe, but he’ll be 50 this January. He definitely knows how to pull his father’s strings. And in all honesty, you were spot on about my straight razor journey. I’ve learned that the sharper a straight is, at least one honed by Ben, the better my shave. He’s pushing me to order one of those Chinese $5 Gold Dollar razors to learn the full honing process. He claims all I’ll ever need will be a Naniwa 1000 waterstone, the jasper stone and a 320 grit smooth diamond plate. He’s got several sets of progressive stones - jnats, shaptons, and his most recent acquisition of Naniwa waterstones, and said he chose my setup knowing both my thrifty soul (read cheap) and impatience. I’m actually looking forward to this next Tuesday.

My grandfather, who I admired, was a career Marine (1918-1948) who fought at Belleau Wood. He retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant. I grew up on those stories and admired the heck out of him. When I was drafted in 65 he made some calls and arranged for me to go into the Marines. I still remember after showing him my draft notice his saying, “kid you don’t wanna be no ‘doggie’, if you need to learn how to fight, might as well learn from the best”! In all honesty, my service was a part of my life I don’t generally like to even think about! I tried to discourage my sons from serving, but all three became Marines serving from Kosovo to Iraq. I do remember being spit on and called a ‘baby killer‘ after discharge. Attitudes have really changed since those days.

She was from Montecatini Terme in Tuscany! I visited my cousins there a few years ago. Four of them succumbed to Covid! You know, Joe, the real Italy! ;)

Most samples of soaps I have tried last me about 5-7 shaves. The two WSP’s that I have may end up giving me about 15 or a little more for the same sample size. A little goes a long way.
