Well, I confirmed my suspicions. The Dilucot method, originally developed as a way of honing razors using a single stone (Belgian Coticule) and a series of slurries of decreasing grit dilutions also works beautifully with my jasper stone. I used a coarse DMT plate to generate the slurries which are then successively diluted until finally one is honing with just water alone. In the case of my Double Duck, my son, Ben, had already set a great bevel. When I examined the edge he’d built with his 30k stone using a 60x jeweler’s loupe, I noticed metal feathers along its length. There was no need to go through the full process. So I very gently ran the edge over the face of the fine side of my jasper hone.

Reexamination with the loupe revealed the flattening and or elimination of the chaff I’d observed earlier along the entire length of the edge on both sides. For the next task I built a very thin slurry with the DMT plate and did 40 circles (20 clockwise & 20 counterclockwise) followed by 20 back and forth strokes. I then finished in water using back and forth strokes until the blade began to stick to the face of the stone. The blade passed the tomato slicing test and was popping hairs to beat the band at that point. I lathered up and discovered that I’d built the kind of buttery smooth edge that was a joy to shave with. I’ll admit that I really enjoyed the process of building an edge that I liked which then delivered me to VBBS land on my mug both above and below the jawline.

The Silversmith with the same Feather blade as yesterday shaved every bit as well as my new Tradere. An examination and comparison of the two head geometries revealed a very similar design. In any case my dome shave today was the usual 1 1/2 pass (ATG, ATG) VBBS. I feel cool, clean, and amazingly velveteen. My MrEE 007 brush performed in its usual superb fashion throughout the shave. The cooling MWF lather was a delight to shave with, as usual. I have four pucks of the stuff, so I’m set for the next few years. It’s a beautiful, sunny day here in the Philadelphia suburbs. I wish all my shave brothers and sisters a great day!

Tomorrow is the actual test of the DiluJasper method from bevel set through finish. I purchased a Puma Solingen razor for virtually nothing ($5), yesterday evening from a local cutlery dealer in Adamstown, PA who complained that he was never able to get a decent edge from it. Ben was with me by phone and encouraged me to buy it. He suspected the blade may be slightly warped and that’s why it may have not yielded to a standard honing progression. Well it failed the tilt ‘n wobble test revealing that it definitely needed a bevel set. Ben, after examining it, felt that I should set the bevel on the 1000 grit Chosera stone and then complete the honing on my jasper stone using decreasing slurry dilutions. So that’s the project for tomorrow’s mug shave. My first complete honing job from bevel set to finish on a problematic straight razor.

2.5 passes today with the Schick L1 provided a comfortable BBS result with no irritation. I did notice a small nick under my chin after the shave though. Balms tend to reveal any mistakes more so than splashes do for me. Too much pressure on the upstroke there I guess.

Today's shave got off to a bit of a rocky start....I used Stoylin Frost Drops on my soap(Razorock Lime Burst), but apparently didn't shake the F.D. vial enough, as it came out looking like Niagra Falls instead of the "drip....drip.....drip..." you want to get. Also, I should have put them in before my shower, not just before my shave. Thus, the first pass was its usual extra-moist. I knew right away the second pass would save me...(like Mr. Cawtuh's "bullpen pass"). The shave itself was very nice...no issues...no cuts, Knicks. What can I say about Cactus Nation-I've worked myself into a solid routine down there. Stoylin Glacial Lime A.S. to close it out. I even put some across my forehead to give the babes SOMETHING to sniff. Y'know, it's funny, at my eye exam the other day, an attractive woman was waiting for her appointment-she had her mask on of course, but the scent of her perfume found a way to penetrate the air ANYWAY. I'll give the shave. a Most Excellent( due to the two mishaps with the Stoylin Frost Drops.)

Felt compelled to do a mini comparison between the BAUME.BE and my newest soap: ETHOS.
Gary asked me if there were any differences between the soap bases?
The biggest difference, of course, is the texture.
B.BE is a cream. Says so right on the label.
ETHOS is a soft soap...affectionately known as a "croap".
Both soaps are sticky at the bottom of the bowl, but the ETHOS is stickier.
Both soaps take on water well, but the ETHOS will "break" if added too quickly.
These days, it's all about the scents and exotic oils.
IMO---and let me stress that! It's a lot of marketing hype.
Do these oils REALLY improve the shave?
Do they REALLY improve the post-shave?
I would argue that they do NOT.
The post-shave I get with my vintage soaps is outstanding.
The soaps that DRY my face out USUALLY contain copious amount of Palm Oil or Coconut Oil.
My recent purchase of Floris dries my skin out.
La Savonnière du Moulin dries my skin out.
Martin de Candre dries my skin out.
But I digress.
Look at the glorious lather I created with the B.BE.

AND...it was MUCH easier to get to this point than it was with the ETHOS.
That doesn't make it better, it's just what it is.
Both soaps offer the exact same slickness.
Both soaps offer the exact same protection.
And...both soaps left my skin feeling fantastic.
In conclusion: If you want some very beautiful scents with matching Skin Food splashes,
you might look into ETHOS.
If, however, you are focussed on great shaves and post-shave scents that you personalize,
BAUME.BE may be the choice for you.

awesome l1 shave Andrew,i find the upstroke passes trickier with long handle razors,probably due to using only short handled ones 99% of the time of course..

Thanks, Joe! Redoing the edge was my second honing baby step! The guy who sold me the Puma said it was a bad blade, and he felt guilty selling it, thus the low price. The guy claimed he’d set the bevel several times, but was never able to get a shaveable edge. I like a challenge. When I tested the blade as per Ben’s tutelage, it failed the tilt n’ wobble test indicating that there wasn’t a true bevel set. Maybe I’m off base, but Ben claims that the guy didn’t know how to set a bevel on a slightly warped blade. He explained the technique, and said that with this razor I would do better setting the bevel on a 1000 grit Chosera stone first before moving on to my jasper stone. So that’s the plan, and I’m sticking to it! Tomorrow the rubber hits the road, or rather the steel hits the stone. Ben said that Puma’s are great razors, and that if I can salvage this one, I won’t regret it! He owns two.

August 22 SOTD

Good morning guys!
Today is a Schick/Stirling Citrus Saturday Shave Day!

Schick E3 Injector
Schick Injector Blade (1)
JR # 290 Synthetic Brush
Stirling Coconut Lime SS and AS

The JR #290 is really a pleasure to use because it makes a very quick and easy lather. Do I really need to go on about the awesomeness of Stirling? Lol! I put a brand new blade in the Schick E3 because the previous blade dulled while hearshaving. For you folks that aren't into straight shaving, but would like one. This razor brings that straight shave result! Two passes with minor buffing and touch ups gave me a BBS shave without any unwelcome visits from Nick, Capt. Blood and the Town Crier. Irritation Man was no where in sight. Splashed on the aftershave and did get a nice burn. I am very happy with the shave. Have a fantastic Saturday my friends!
