    Monday's Shave

    1953 Gillette Super Speed (Y3)
    Gillette Platinum (3)
    Semogue 820 Boar
    Proraso Green Shaving Soap
    Dickinson's Witch Hazel
    Proraso Green Aftershave

Two days in a row for the Proraso goodness. Saved the green for Mentho Monday. While I am applying monikers, I guess yesterday was Sandalwood Sunday.

Three passes with the Gillette Super Speed provided a very comfortable BBS result and no irritation or mishaps.

Thank you Andrew. Since my lawn trouble supporting grass, we have a lot of rock gardens.

Welcome to "the Dark Side" as open edge shaving is sometimes called.

When I took up straights, a main concern became my own ability to assess if poor results were the 'operator in training' or the 'condition of the gear'. I chose to have 2 straights with known edges created by experienced individuals.

If I had to do it again I'd use the Focus R21 Evolution half DE shavette and a new blade every 4 days. You can get one of these delivered from The Superior Shave for less than $20.

Just an option. Also, without a blade it will help you figure out your grips and angles.

Take your time, use care and don't push progress, you will see steady improvements as you go along. There are folks that nail it in a week or two, I gave myself an allocation of 100 shaves.

you might be right about it not being sharp enough. when I was shaving with it,( although It never cut me ) it was tugging a bit and it hurt a little bit. in my logical thinking, correct me if I am wrong, if the blade was sharp enough it should be able to cut through smoothly without tugging or hurting.

My first straight, purchased 18 years ago, was the round pointed Theirs-Issard Super Gnome Extra. It was not until about three years ago I started to get more comfortable using it. (Long learning curve.). This was probably more so due to the factory edge, once properly honed my shaves just took off. As you are aware first hand, @Trigger, I now have ventured into the custom straight razor realm with two Drew Dick’s.
Agreed, the round point would be a great introduction. Perhaps even a “modern” razor such as a Dovo, Boker or Theirs would have been a great introductory razor. Some might say a Gold Dollar, but the edges can be a crap shoot. Going the vintage route, requires so due diligence, understanding the history behind the company, type of metal used, how it may hold an edge. Some lower end priced vintage razors would include Genco and JR Torrey.

I believe I've heard Jarrod comment on his own deficiencies with interpersonal skills. I can't say that I was impressed in phone conversations, he always seemed to be on the defensive.

I enjoy his vids and his writings.
