Neither, I build the lather with the brush directly on the puck, adding miniscule amounts of water to the brush until I like what I see.

This is interesting, Bill. I have a Naniwa 12k and a Shapton 16k. It "feels" like the Shapton is grittier than the Naniwa. Is that unusual?
