You may be right on certain things Bill. I don't want to sound like I am the Babe Ruth of shaving, but before I went to shavette/straight shaving, I found using safety razors to be unchallenging because I didn't have to think about razor placement. I just shaved. I don't think my skill as a DE shaver helped me with grasping shavette shaving with lightening speed as compared to those that have tried. I took my time and developed a real light touch that helped me succeed because my blood loss was at a minimum during those initial 16 shavette shaves. I will agree that my straight/shavette shaving skills have made me a better DE shaver, but it was never the other way around. I am not discounting that there are some DE shavers with fantastic skills will do well going into straight shaving, but that wasn't the case with me because I was just an average safety razor shaver.

I need help. Not sure this is the right group to provide the kind of help I need, but I just gold plated a brush handle.

Sears had very little to do with the manufacture of the razor other than rebranding this Ern. I’m not sure if they did the gold plating and scales, or if it that was all done in solingen.

While many here, including me, have adopted the open edge, the 30 Day Crew thread was founded in the search of the needed skills predominantly in safety razor shaving regardless of the gear selected.

It is far too confusing someone who just bought a 34C and a 30 blade sampler for a guy like me to stand up and say "my Parker Variant set on 4 with a Feather is what you gotta use to get rid of those ingrowns". I read plenty of that kind of thing from the gear jumping gangs.

Sure, open edge shaving is an enjoyable pursuit that takes a larger time block to learn. Once done, most can pick up any qualified open edge tool and shave with it. At least I can. The next logical pursuit becomes edge maintenance for permanent blade devices.

While I can easily pick up any qualified open edge tool now and have a consistency of result when I'm splashing on the aftershave, I don't find that simplicity with safety razors. If you go to Maggards, you will find a couple of hundred different safety razors. Add in 50 different blades and you have exponential growth. Sure an experienced wetshaver will deliver a presentable shave with almost any of them, but why do they often take multiple shaves to get them 'dialed in'? A experienced straight shaver will know before he finishes the first pass if the tool he is using is qualified. If it passes, he has it 'dialed in' before the shave ends. If it fails no amount of adjusting time or 'dialing in' will bring a change.

I stand by my opinion that top shaves using a DE require greater skills than shaving open edge.
