I'm in, Evan, should you decide to proceed. Your brush handles are beautiful.

With a quorum present, and as a Charter Member, Chief Shenanigator, and past Historian of the 30 DC, I move that we grant the "30 DC LE" brush designation to your project.

Can I get a second to this motion?

That weather reminds me of a lot of the scenes in the show, Man in the High Castle.

    Me, generally speaking here....

I have no problem with the act of removing hair at the skin level with an edge forward shaving device within the limits of my own dexterity and beard pattern. For me, executing the perfect ATG move accomplishes this. However, some areas require moves that are more risky on ones self than they would be on another person (barber style). IMO

In search of that BBS level 5, I find no problem open edge on the cheeks, even when the straight could use a touch up. I have done the 'inverted blade apple peeling move' needed for perfection under the jawline, but have not made it a practice due to reach dexterity, not the inability to handle the razor.

In my shaves with the guard-free DE-Vette, I found incredible closeness and comfort even on the lower neck ATG. I could probably easily get the same result on the razor in my focus if the guard teeth were cut off. The price to pay is concentrated attention.

Even with the similar use of that concentrated attention, shaving with a DE safety razor requires a more precise control of angle and pressure to stay on blade and off cap and/or guard, especially a milder one. On the cheeks, the best shave is easy-peasey for me open edge, no so much DE. Maybe I need to just mush in and just keep raking away at it like I've seen so many YouTubers doing. That would definitely be easier.

Pivoting razors are another thing altogether. Most pivot back and away making the spring tension a huge factor. When I agreed to a swap test of a DE and an injector vs. a 6 bladed Dollar Shave tool, I found a much higher spring resistance on the Dollar than found in Gillette gear, still they both pivot backwards. The 6 blade monster did surprise me, but I won't be jumping the fence soon. The Focus Dynamic R48 pivots differently, and into the skin to ride the bar and cap when used correctly. Load me a Feather correctly and I'll be irritation free cotton ball test smooth, if I am sure to make enough passes truly ATG. Minimal artistic touch required.

The owner and design engineer at Focus in Italy recently introduced a double edge non-pivoting version (Tritok R51) with the same geometry that I would anticipate to deliver the same great results. I doubt you will find a Max Headroom pursuit of this particular tool, but in the scenerio of what tool requires the greatest shaving skills; Tritok R51 vs Open Edge, I have my money on the open edge tools.

My opinion still stands that great DE shaving is a more challenging endeavor. Why do adjustables have adjustments? Why do artisan shavers continually stream new and different stuff with multitudes of caps and plate variations? Maybe just because we here at the 30DC get to insist folks practice reason and take the time to learn such tools?..........uh....nah..... follow the money.

Why am I doing a mini focus with a DE as old as my father? Because unlike open edge tools, there is a more of a learning curve from one to the next. When I'm done, I'll be able to shave with it as well as my wide open adjustables though.

Maybe my opinion is nullified by my goal of maximum comfort vs maximum hair length reduction, particularly open edge.

Or... I have just never really learned how to straight shave. We will know for sure when my writings bark "nothing shaves as close and as smooth as a straight", which is kind of opposed to the whole 'technique trumps tools' thing though.

I'll never discourage people from undertaking the longer learning curve of open edge shaving, because it's fun and can benefit your progress with other gear especially DE safety razors.
